Anyone on here ever have hermit crabs? I just rescued two. The people who had them were not taking care of them. I read a lot online but would like to know anyone else's personal experience with hermit crabs and any advice. They barely had an inch of substrate in their tiny enclosure. They are now in a 40 gallon tank with 7inches of sand/coconut fiber mix. I put climbing toys and hide out caves in their tank along with a food bowl, fresh water bowl and salt water bowl. The one crab lives in the food bowl. The other has buried himself and he can't be seen. Is this behavior normal? I read about molting and to leave the one alone (which I have). I have only had them for a day. Is there anything else I should be doing for them?

Yeah they will bury themselves. Sometimes for weeks. It sounds like you have a good habitat for them. Make sure you have shells of various sizes bigger than their current ones available.

That site was very helpful. Thank you! I have a bunch of shells in there and the little one is enjoying pushing them all around. They had each crab living in a tiny carrier side by side of each other. They must have recognized each other because when I put them in their new home they quickly ran to each other and the one actually put his little arms (claws?) around the other as if hugging him. Then they began exploring together.
