I'm so sorry that your fuzzie is not feeling well. If you don't mind then please allow me a few questions. Is your ferret vet an exotic vet specialist? Do his little nose ears and paws look pink or pale? Are you or his vet familiar with the blockage protocol and did they try a barium xray?
I will send healing thoughts and hope for the best for both of you. Love Poncesmom

There have been a number of ferrets who've been spiking a fever, having resulting stomach upsets and lethargy. I'm wondering if there is a virus (human) that is going around. Remember, ferrets are particularly susceptible to viruses (it's why they make good lab animals they're the test subjects for your flu vaccines). There are a couple of diseases that exhibit these symptoms, which means it needs to be narrowed down. Usually, a blockage does not exhibit a high fever (virus) but a bowel infection does. Ulcers don't usually cause an elevated fever. This is pointing to a viral or bacterial infection. Testing is the only way to actually confirm this. Have they started him on an antiviral or bacterial antibiotic (there are a few drugs that do help with viral infections). The hardest thing about them running a very high fever is dehydration which they're treating with IV fluids which is good. Big diseases that cause high fevers in ferrets (excluding a viral or bacterial infection) is DIM and ECE but the symptoms do not appear to be ECE. DIM has a very specific protocol. I hope you find answers soon. Good luck, please keep us posted ciao

they did xray but not burium xray. he is setting and having normal bowel movements. his bowls are slightly in large. they have home on antibiotics I am not sure if anti viral. and this practice takes ferrets but they are not specialist. which I am concerned about.

I have no specialists near me. My vet is an hour away for me but I'm more than happy to drive that far for her open minded method of investigating and putting up with my many questions. We've had more than a few discussions that we've started out miles apart and eventually coming to an agreement. You don't have to have an expert (it does help but I've heard some experts so entrenched in their past knowledge that they're almost unwilling to look at newer methods, which is really unfortunate. Having a vet who's willing to be open minded and willing to investigate is sometimes worth every bit as much as an expert, after all they can get hold of experts if the need arises ciao

Thanks Heather. Yes she is not a specialist but is a younger vet w ok th a more open mind. She said dim then I sat in the room and got as much info on dim as I could. When she came back into the room she said she found out the same stuff and his blood work also point to not being dims. So yes we have been bouncing stuff off each oeither. She was also pushing to get his temp down in the 100 and I told her I am happy with 102. she came back to me and said I agree 102 is not that bad. I just called the vets and his temp is now in the 101.and they said after I left he was playing hard. yaya

It does indeed sound like bacterial or viral infection, and that he is heading in the right direction

It will probably take a few days for him to recover, he's been really sick. If the lethargy continues I would be tempted to return to the vet for further investigation ciao
