I guess the pool on the porch wasn't so safe after all. It's 4 ft off the ground at the low end, with a 3 ft high playpen around the perimeter, a hardware cloth screen above to discourage birds, and a rock formation to hide in. Phil was left out last night and this morning he was gone. We're kicking ourselves in the butt right now for being so careless and overconfident. It could have been that stupid fishercat, a coon or anything big enough and thirsty enough to risk coming on the porch for a drink. He was to the point where he's swim into our hands and enjoyed being handled. We're sorry Phil... Bask in peace

We had just put the filter out there so maybe the should of moving water attracted some predator. We had been bringing him in at night but after we put up the screen we figured he was ok. That won't happen again. He was looking so good after being in the direct sun for a couple weeks. I'm already looking for another painted, and just ordered a Mississippi map turtle.

The natural sunlight was so good for his shell, but I'm afraid to let any pets outdoors anymore. I'm going to have to figure a way to enclose the pool that is easily accessed by hoomans. We want to set up a small pond, which might be safer by being deeper, but such would be a real pain to move if we ever had to.
