I'm at work, but texting Steve every thirty minutes to make sure Spike is getting at least 4 oz of water in him for that time period. I syringed him soupie before leaving and got a full 12 oz in him before he started freaking out, but that's the most we've gotten him to eat sonce the fourth... Hoping he's kept it down.

Be careful not to over feed him, this can make him sick as well. 12 oz is a lot of liquid, especially to get in a ferret ciao

Be careful not to over feed him, this can make him sick as well. 12 oz is a lot of liquid, especially to get in a ferret ciao Spike is a German Shepherd, I promise I would never give a ferret more than a half or full oz at a time at this point. We just got off the phone with the vet... There is so much going on that the vet doesn't want to give us a full diagnosis without an X-ray... You all are going to be shocked though, my Dog with Lymphoma doesn't show a high amount of lymphocytes, but the vet suspects Insulimnoma.Even though it's rare in dogs. Spikes BG is at 21 when it should be in the mid hundreds. He suggested Karo Syrup, and to get more syringe feedings. Right now we have to make a choice though because if we go through with the rest of the tests we're worried we may just be prolonging the inevitable. His blood work showed: Kidney problems Low BG Liver issues again He Weighs a scant 54 pounds... We don't know if we should say goodbye or fight right now. The vet didn't really give us a lot of answers because he's still not positive of the true issue, if there even is one.

At this point I think you should be prepared for the worst. 54 lbs... You probably know what it's like to deal with insulinoma. At his age with kidney problems... You're in my thoughts.

He's always been underweight, it's something we've been working in for years, but this is the thinnest he's been since we got him. We are getting x-rays done now, and will have a decision by tomorrow.
I have never encountered insulinoma, so this is all new. We're using the karo syrup now, the vet said to get some in him and check for improvement for about an hour then bring him in for a BG read, and some more Sub Q fluids.
Our biggest fear is we nearly put him down two years ago when his liver crashed because it seemed like the end, and thank God we didn't jump the gun and he had an amazing two years. This X-ray will be our last test before making the decision to help him off ro the Rainbow Bridge..

When I say X-rays now, I mean today, in about three hours.

Forgive me, I wrongly assumed that having ferrets for some time you had dealt with insulinoma. The conditions you describe may each be treatable. wishing you the best

No it was a normal assumption. Puck was my only ferret, and we lost him to Cardiomyopathy. I knew what to look for in case of insulinoma but have never seen it or Adrenal.
We said good bye to Spike at the vet, as he had huge tumors on his liver, and had started seizing. He would not have survived the surgery to remove the tumors, and we didn't think he'd pull out of the seizures.
We decided not to do a necropsy on Spike as the vet truly believes it was an insulinoma cancer coupled with his long battle with a failing liver and lymphoma.
Our son is lost now... He has no Puck and no Spike.. In tears my husband said where he's happy Spike knew love.. He doesn't want an old sick rescue next time we get a pet, that he's so happy I love giving those needy ones homes and love when no one else will, but he can't watch me and my son break again and again...
For now our dog beds and our ferret cage shall remain empty. All of the love we had in us to give has shriveled and shrunk away into the deep recesses of our hearts. For now we mourn and rejoice that our boys are healthy and happy once again at the Bridge.

I'm so sorry for your loss of Spike. It sounds as though he was deeply loved and cared for. It is so sad, no matter how long we have them it is just never long enough, 1 day, 1 year, 20 years, in the end it is all the same to us, it is just a flash in the pan when we are faced with good byes. Never long enough for our broken hearts.
I wish you and your's comfort and peace.

I'm really sorry for your loss. With a heart as big as yours, it may not be so long before you allow another critter to come in and curl up for a nap. RIP Spike
