I saw a Craigslist ad for a Ferret Nation cage that had some chew damage from pet rats. At 100 bucks I thought it was a steal... Not all of the damage was chew damage, but I thought it'd be fine, for a freaking 250 dollar cage being that cheap...
Its a *bleep*ing Feisty Ferret.... a 130 dollar cage... That won't even stand up to any more damage because of the damage its already gotten. Its worth MAYBE 75 bucks.
My ferrets have been in their travel cage for WAY too long, and I need a cage ASAP, but I don't trust this cage now because I'm thinking there's more damage than I can see.
Ferret Nations are really cheap on Amazon now, but I don't get paid for another week and I don't want to put it on my credit card when I don't currently have the money.
Also, how do I get my money back for this cage??? I could barely afford it as it was, and now I definitely can't since it isn't the quality I thought it was.

How big is their travel cage? I keep my boys in their travel cage for significant periods during the summer as we go back and forth between the house and cabin. I don't see why they can't wait one more week until you get paid. Just give them plenty of play time outside of the cage. As for the CL cage, no offense but if it was in such bad shape why did you hand over your $ and take the cage home? You could have just said yeah this is not what you advertised I'm not buying it, and left.... Hate to say it but you're just going to have to eat the loss on that one. You could try to resell it on CL for cheap and get a little back.

Their travel cage is 4x1.5x1.5, and I would keep them in there if they couldn't squeeze out between the bars and get their heads stuck.
I wasn't there during the transaction for the cage, I was working. The structural damage was glued together and wasn't immediately noticeable, and he didn't know what the difference between a Feisty Ferret and a Ferret Nation was besides the name. If I were there, I'd have refused to buy it.

Get some hardware cloth and zip ties and cover the bars to keep them from squeezing out. Hardware cloth is about $5-10 for a roll (we just spent $6 on a roll). Not a permanent solution but a cheap way to keep them safe until you can get a better cage. Is there somewhere you could set up as a temporary ferret room? Bathroom maybe?
Sucks about the cage.:/ Can you Jerry-rig it to be useable until you can get a new one? If it's that bad and it's unsafe I'd ditch it. I don't think the person who sold it is likely to accept a return unfortunately. They're liking the $ they just scored.

They do already have their own room with the cat, but they're being brats about litter boxes and I don't want the carpet stained (this apartment complex is weird about any kind of stain). If they *do* get out, they'll be safe, but I'm concerned with them getting stuck or getting a hold of the cat. I'll pick up some hardware cloth if the CL cage doesn't work out.
I'm thinking that as long as there aren't any more broken parts, I could just use the cage without the base until I can buy a FN. Hopefully the doors close right.
I'm just freaking out about the fact that, including the gas money it took to pick up the cage, I paid the same price as if I bought a new one of the same type. The person seemed nice and honest, but then I saw the logo on the base pan.

They probably don't even know the difference to be honest - they are pretty similar cages. Can you put the cats in a different room?

I was hoping to do that anyway, until I can get some cat shelves for the pet room. The person I live with gets bothered by shedding, but they might be understanding.

Can you post a pic of the FF cage? My hubby & I have become masters of jerry rigging cages, we might be able to offer suggestions on making it functional for the time being.
You can try to get money back, but as Katt said, you are mostly likely just going to have to eat the loss. CL is an "as-is" buyer beware set up. But don't feel bad, it happens to everyone. I was duped in an apartment scam for $2000, broke my heart (and my bank account). In retrospect I just call it a very expensive life lesson.
They will be okay in their travel cage..I kept my 6 in a double FN for 2 weeks. They weren't thrilled, but they were fiiiiiine.

If they can slip through the bars of their travel cage I would reinforce it with hardware cloth REGARDLESS. I would not suggest keeping an animal in a cage they can escape or get stuck in. Whether you keep them in the travel cage a little while or move them to the cage now, I would not suggest using the travel cage for anything until it is fixed so that it isn't dangerous. Hardware cloth is a fast, inexpensive, easy, and effective solution. I suggest grabbing a small cheap pair of wire cutters at the same time so you don't have to rely on bending the wire until it breaks or ruining your scissors.

We got it put together. One of the horizontal support beams are completely broken off, but once everything was screwed in tight and the bottom put in, it seems to have stabilized when we took off the wheels (which was strangely difficult, I wonder if they glued them in). I put the plastic tray above the wire bottom so their paws wouldn't hurt and the litter will stay in better. Its very temporary, but they can't get out of it like their travel cage, which is being retired until we get it more secure.

I'm sorry you got a bad deal. If you could post pics of the damage maybe I can come up with a fix. I'm trying to picture what damage a rat could do to a FF, other than the plastic trays. Craigslist was not too bad in Florida, but here in Tennessee it seems like most people post stuff for way more than it's worth. Cars especially seem to be listed for $1000 more than book value. Maybe it's because people like to haggle. We've been looking for a freezer for a year and finally found one. Hardware cloth is pretty cheap, but be careful with it. I wear gloves working with it because when you cut it there are a lot of Sharp edges. Lowe's sells a plastic version in the garden shop that's easier to work with. I used a piece to keep the ferts out of the bottom of the above freezer, lol.
