Lelloo gained a pot belly in the middle of summer-spring! Woot Woot. Some of you may know that lee is my first ferret and is a very petite little girl of 1lb 1-2 oz max. She NEVER has muscle mass and is very bony. But today I was holding her and noticed she is at least 3 to 4 oz heavier. Every since putting them fully on raw, it's been a total of 1month + 10 days since I started in raw, Everyones gone from pretty to drop dead pretty! lol or at least to their mommy. Heres a video- www.youtube.com/user/BunchOfFerrets#p/a/u/0/_0MHDtLM-xoI'll have to take a good photo of lee's pot belly. But just the fact that she has a belly when everyone should be lossing weight is fantastic!! One question though: Could a ferret gain too much weight like us humans? and how do you tell if they should loose weight vs gain? when does kit fat fall off? Tazzie is 6 months and is all flub while dirt is sleek.

Love it! What's the best way to weigh (hee hee) ferrets? With my cat, I hold her and get on the scale. Do you use the same method for ferrets? I don't think my scale would be exact enough. Time to invest in a postal scale?

I use a kitchen scale that goes to 10 lbs. I put a long tuppeware container on the scale with some oil on one end, zero it out, then put in the ferret.

Thanks Sherry - good to know. I've been planning on buying a kitchen scale anyway so I can start measuring meats, etc.

Hi at 6 months of age she is still growing so will have baby fat you will see her correct shape ( and if she is eating raw she will develop a nice muscular body ) once she hits 10-12 months old you usually see the true shape of a kit the first spring they are are a year old don't worry about jelly bellies in kits that's a good sign it means there is plenty to change into muscle and for there growth hope this helps take care bye for now Bev aka crazy lady

Yep, ferrets can get overweight--Paulie is an example. Mama was so happy he gained weight on raw that he gained to much, then put on pred weight. Now we are taking it off again. He could eat soupies all day--but he would be a very tubby ferret (okay, he is one). But I think, honestly, your vet will tell you if your little one puts on too much. Actually, you can tell, because of the things they can't get into (climbing and such because they are bottom heavy). Paulie is just now starting to change fat for muscle again, and is back to climbing into my bed to wake me up (instead of digging like crazy).
