FireAngel, I'm so sorry to be mia lately. there were some health emergencies that popped up, but things are starting to smooth out now. the good thing is that throughout all this, the ferrets have still been getting their raw food. but because of all this, I haven't been TOO dedicated to push them on the whole prey. as things smooth out more, that's definitely a priority. they're being lazy, picky butts, so I'll DEFINITELY have to be more stubborn than them. I've also found someone local who raises mice and rats for snake owners, and I'm trying to get in contact with them. hopefully we can work something out (because shipping whole prey is so expensive!! this would help immensely, haha). my menu is relatively the same. I need to work on getting some variety in here . . .

I'm glad things are getting better. Adding the mice and rats will be a big help in variety. When you have the time I'd like you to do a mock menu that includes 7 whole prey or complete meals in it for practice.

FireAngel , ok, so I am going to delete and reinstall completely my tapatalk app, because I'm 150% sure that I've replied to this message . . . I'm not sure why my replies aren't working?? In any case, I'll just check the forum via web every day to be sure. :/// (it's also done this on another forum I'm on so wth tapatalk . . . ) they're still strongly resisting the mice/rats! little stubborn butts. Misio's a little worse than Kinga (but what's new, haha). OK mock menu!! Monday am: baby mice Monday pm: turkey necks Tuesday am: baby mice Tuesday pm: beef Wednesday am: baby rats Wednesday pm: beef heart Thursday am: baby mice Thursday pm: pork Friday am: baby rats Friday pm: 1/2 beef heart + 1/4 chicken liver + 1/4 pork brain Saturday am: baby mice Saturday pm: pork Sunday am: baby rats Sunday pm: 1/2 chicken liver + 1/2 pork brain is . . . this what you mean? I'm a little confused. also, some weeks, could I exchange the beef heart for tongue? tongue is almost always available around me

That is what I meant yes A reminder though baby animals are not considered balanced. They are treats. Adult animals are the ones that are balanced. Young ones are missing some of the hormones etc, so anything after sexual maturity is fine. The menu is good other then it only uses babies. Beef tongue is ok to use on occasion but should not be used as a complete substitute. If you do this you need to add a taurine powder supplement.

oh wow!! I had no ideas the babies weren't considered balanced!! that's . .. good to know. I only have the babies at the moment. (facepalm) lately, Misio has been in a really strange, picky mood. he won't eat unless I start him off, babying him by spoonfeeding for a while (or only by spoonfeeding). smh, he really is in a mood. I've tried introducing those baby mice/rats, and it really only makes Misio more picky--Kinga still eats around the mice, but she does lick up the juices, which is a step in the right direction! thanks for the info about the tongue!

Chop the babies up small and mix them in with their favorite food. This will help them at least get used to the taste.

haha!! so misio managed to eat a couple with his hen, although you could always tell when he got a tiny bit of mouse, because he'd Shake his head and have this nasty expression, haha! but he didn't always spit them out, so that's a step in the right direction!!
kinga was much the same, although she was more trying to eat around the mice than anything, haha

Aswesome! You have been ready for ages! I need a menu for a week to have approved by Heather and you need to answer this short final exam. You will do great! 1.)Why are hearts important in a ferrets diet and if you run out of heart what can you use to replace it until you get more heart? 2.) How often should you feed and how long and should a ferret ever be without food? 3.) Name three edible bone in items. 4.) Name three organs. 5.) If you need a short term bone replacer what can you use and how much? 6.) Does freezing degrade taurine? Good luck!!

yay!! ok:
Monday am: chicken wings Monday pm: turkey necks
Tuesday am: turkey necks Tuesday pm: pork
Wednesday am: cornish hen Wednesday pm: beef heart
Thursday am: chicken wings Thursday pm: beef
Friday am: ground fish (with bones) Friday pm: 1/2 beef heart + 1/4 beef liver + 1/4 pork brain
Saturday am: turkey necks Saturday pm: pork
Sunday am: cornish hen Sunday pm: 1/2 beef liver + 1/2 pork brain
the questions:
2.) How often should you feed and how long and should a ferret ever be without food? they should be fed in the morning and the evening on a raw diet. the food should be with them for an hour or so (making sure they don't stash any!!!) or until they finish their portions. if the ferrets were eating kibble, it could be left out so the ferret could "graze" all day (because kibble is so crappy they'd need to), but eating raw, ferrets can be without food until their mealtimes at morning and evening.
3.) Name three edible bone in items. turkey necks, chicken wings, whole prey like mice/rats
4.) Name three organs. liver, brain, kidneys
5.) If you need a short term bone replacer what can you use and how much? you can use ground-up eggshells. 1/2-3/4 tsp per 10 oz of meat
6.) Does freezing degrade taurine? no, not by freezing
