Hi guys, I signed up for desperate non medical advice. I am a receptionist at a vets and just over 4 weeks ago we had a little jill left at the surgery before opening. I have 2 castrated hobs at home so after contacting necessary rescues ect and reporting that we had one left with us incase she had escaped and been found I took her home to stay with me. About 10 days ago it became very obvious to me that she was pregnant, I already had my suspicions as she wasnt swollen and I was doubting she had been jill jabbed. I took her back into work and the vet gave her a look over and told me that she was about 2 weeks off. She started giving birth at about midday yesterday, I have been having peeks as I don't want to disturb her to much, she has been out her nest a few times, been for a poo and a wee, she has eaten and drank, I have put as much food in for her as I could, she has beef mince, dry biscuits, lactose free milk and water. I just have some questions that I dont want to bother my vet with. When will I be able to safely clean her cage out? I have pooped scooped her litter tray but obviously the nest ect is going to get dirty. Also she pushed 3 dead kits out of her nest and under the advice of someone that I could get hold of last night I removed them, should I check the nest for anymore? Thanks in advance

I would leave her to it for now, I generally clear out dead kits at about day 7-10 if it's necessary. I tend to cleanout at the very earliest a week after they've whelped, but if you can clean around the nest, I would do that. Jills generally keep their nest pretty clean, so I wouldn't worry too much about cleaning her nest. In fact, it might upset her if you go changing the bedding in her nest too early. I would just feed her really well, spot clean as much as you can and let her do the rest Congrats on the babies, and kudos to you for taking her in.

Congratulations on your little ones Has she settled and started nursing her little ones? Are the wee meepers being loud? Thank you for taking this wee one in and giving her a safe place to have her little ones ciao

She seems to be nursing, lying on her side and they look like they are latching, I keep having sneaky peeks without her noticing me, have covered her over with a black net curtain so that she can't particularly see anything around outside the cage but I can see in and they really are noisy little things for saying they are so small. I took some sneaky pics when she left for dinner and they are all wriggling round and shouting for her. I have had fuzzies for about 6 years so fairly new to it all still. My boys are both castrated and my previous girl was neutered too, never had babies of any kind, very odd that it terrifies me and excites me at the same time. Thanks for the replies

If they're screaming but nursing (yes they're loud and stinky) they should be fine. Try not to disturb mom too much, just let her do her job. Make sure she's eating and she seems content. If she's nursing the wee meepers then she's done the first part of her job (birthing them all) and is now moving on to the nursing. The standard is to observe for about a week to 10 days before handling the wee ones. I think that's how long I left my guys. The hardest part is to be a hands off observer, moving in only if the jill is in trouble ciao

Congrats! Pinkies!! I know you weren't expecting it, but welcome to ferretry. Let mom do the work and just be there to support. I'm kind of jealous but I'd be scared too. Bev Vicki-Ann and Heather have been there. As in everything ferret, patience is the key. Mom will let you know when it's ok to touch. I hope everything turns out ok. Please keep us updated.

Hey guys, I went in her cage this morning to fill her food dishes and she came out her nest with one in her mouth, bought it to her bowls, then took it back and came back for food, is that normal? When she was in labour she had quite abit of blood on her but she had cleaned all up and looks quite bright eyed, she is eating and drinking well, taking a lot of food back with her. The vet said she is only a year old so this is going to be her first litter as well as mine

Bah, poleys and 'binos....we will not go there :pullhair: Anyway, the reason....everyone knows wee 'binos are the sweetest, most loving little sods . They're also class "A" escape artists and get into everything...makes them prime candidates for naughty oops litters. True B&E artists (says owner of the B&E twins (Bacchus and Enigma) ciao
