I am in the process of transitioning my four ferrets onto raw, all but one are doing great... but on the subject, I had a question. If raw is so great for ferrets (I support raw, my 18 year old kitty was a raw kitty!) why does it make their breath smell/give them diarrhea depending on what they ate? My ferrets had "puppy breath" up until I started feeding them raw, now their breath wreaks. Also, I was reading here: holisticferret60.proboards.com/thread/2469 that runny poops are normal... ANOTHER QUESTION, why don't ferrets make more compacted poops? Why is it so runny? |

Ferrets on raw have looser stools because they for once in their lives can afford to let go of waste fluids. On kibbles they're always at the point of dehydration. Ferrets like cats do not drink enough, so kibbles are brutal on their organs.
If your ferret's breath is bad I'd be looking at your balance and possibly their teeth. Just because they're on raw doesn't mean that they don't have problems with their teeth. Bad breath = tooth problems or renal problems, unless you're in the middle of a switch in which chances are it's the soupy. Once they're eating whole meats and prey there isn't bad breath or at least shouldn't be

Can it be replaced with ground bone? |

The egg shell at this level is very important because it is the calcium that is supposed to be the bone in your meat mixture. If you've been skipping this then this will also account for loose stools and foul breath. Yes, if you have access to ground bone (uncooked) or bonemeal (food grade not garden) you can replace the egg shell powder with this

Vitamin shoppe has the brand called KAL. Sometimes they add stuff like vitamin d. I would just get the plain.

If you have a meat grinder or a blender capable of pulverizing bone, you can do whole chicken or game hen including the bone.

Bone in is better so that's ok. The egg shell or bone meal is only because most people do not at this stage have the capacity to grind bone in meals.
