A co-worker bought a sugar glider without thinking of the responsibility. He had it in a tiny hamster cage so for the sake of the sugar glider I gave him a large cage I don't use anymore. He no longer wants the sugar glider and asked if I did, but I said no. I don't know the first thing about them and I think my home would be too hectic. The sugar glider is in a bad place and they don't take care of him. I can't find any sugar saver rescues in my area. I don't know what to do.

aww poor wee mite. I hate when that happens. People get bad information and an animal suffers for it.
I think sugar gliders need warmer temps than ferrets. I'm not sure but I think I read that. They definitely have dietary needs that are different.

I'm contacting sugar glider people in my area trying to get this little guy help. He's in a neglectful, borderline abusive home.

If you can, it sounds like you could help with diet-making at least... You know, like make freeze and thaw meals for it in containers or whatever and give them to the current owner. They fail fast when they don't eat the right food. Don't be suckered into paying for the food though, sugar gliders are very expensive to feed, they eat fresh fruits. This is a horrible situation to be stuck in, knowing about animals in need and not being able to help. Never feel guilty about putting you and your own pets first.

I told my co-worker ferrets are my thing and a sugar glider wouldn't be happy in my home. My ferrets are free roam and they'd scare the poor little guy with their curiosity and craziness.

As I understand it, Sugar Gliders really need room to fly. A big enclosure is necessary but I'm not a sugar glider expert nor have I had one. I know some of our members do or did and I'll try to remember who they are or find a good forum for you.

On FB there are some gliders groups, try asking there if someone would take him.

Having a Sugar Glider all alone in a cage is abuse. They are VERY social animals and need at least one friend. People tend to get large bird flight cages for them and they are a lot of work. I really hope that you can find someone for him. I hate when people treat animals like dirt. If you made a mistake and it's the wrong animal for you then you should still take the best possible care of it until a more loving home comes along. People tend to sometimes become lax on their animals care once they have decided that they no longer want them and that bugs me. Anyways best of luck!!

This guy bugs the h!@* out of me. He had the sugar glider in a tiny hamster cage. Having just one by itself is mean in my opinion (in the wild they live in groups of 10-15). Sugar gliders are a 15 year commitment. But this guy also has a bunch of kids he doesn't take care of. His excuse was, "my girlfriend wanted it." I told him, "my husband wants a lot of pets too but I tell him no." My husband is a loving pet owner, but not responsible. I'm the one who cleans everyone out, feeds them, he just plays with them. Lol

There is simply no excuse for someone like that. Karma catches up eventually though. I hope this little sugar glider finds a loving healthy happy forever home.
I'm still trying to remember who had sugar gliders though. Did you contact any of those rescues? Also are you on the HFF FB page? I'd post there also. It's a large community and someone will know of someone to help.
I'm hesitant to suggest this but perhaps you could take this little one in or someone else will until you can find the proper home. I doubt he will bother and I worry about the fragile little one living like that until help is found.

You're right about karma! It'll catch up to him quick. When I thought about it and made the decision to take in the sugar glider and find it a loving home, he tells me he wants mobey for the glider. I said, "I don't give people like you money. If you decide to do the right thing, my home is open to him." I probably shouldn't have, but I gave him a lecture on pet responsibility. But he doesn't even value his kids lives, so I'm not surprised that he treats this poor sugar glider the way he does.

Lecture was in order. Probably the only one he will ever hear on pet care.

Unfortunately, once I decided to take the sugar glider the guy decided he wanted money for him. He was asking way too much, considering the glider is sick and I would have been paying vet bills right off the bat. Some people are more concerned about making a buck off their pet than doing the right thing. He has an ad on craigslist and instead of screening which home the little glider will go to it's "first come first serve or whoever gives me the most money".
