Definitely makes sense. The inorganic salts (calcium carbonate for example) will not degrade from heating.

I totally agree. When you cook this you indeed change the composition and you do indeed loose some of the integrity of the raw diet but....remember the idea behind why it was given. I would not do this for a healthy fuzz, except to teach him how to eat it (as you do for soupy). This is a "baby food replacement"....Those of us who have fed ferrets who have lymphosarcomas, late stage adrenal, late stage insulinoma, very very sick ferrets, ferrets recuperating from surgery, uncontrolled IBD ...usually resort to feeding human baby food so that they can get some nutritional value into the ferret. It is the only thing that ferrets will eat at this stage of the game. They can no longer process bone, they can no longer process raw meat....they are dying. This is when you make this food. It is easily digested, and has components that baby food (human food) doesn't have. As was mentioned yes, some of the marrow will leach into the broth...but that's what it's for. You don't dump it you throw the whole thing into the food processor. Excess broth is used to create a electrolyte solution (with a few ingredients, you can create a pedialyte replacement that your ferret will actually enjoy drinking) You take everything, use everything. I hope none of you ever have to force feed a dying ferret, that being said you probably will it goes with the territory. This is the food that will give them strength that they need to continue being a ferret. This allows them those last few months, weeks, days. This allows them to be comfortable. Raw meat eventually doesn't digest in a sick or dying ferret. It comes out exactly as it goes in. This digests, this means that with all the other things going wrong, your fuzz doesn't starve to death and with this particular mixture it means that your ferret will not be deprived nutritionally which is one of the problems that happens with human baby food. ciao

Heather, could you make a post with the cooking of bones and the receipies for the replacement baby food and electrolyte solution and stickie it? That way if and when someone needs it it's right there and we don't have to search through posts to get to it?
