I've got a whole freezer of food for Floki just by looking at Craigslist and Facebook groups that have pets for sale. Most of them were free! Am I a horrible person for this? Lol I kind of feel wrong, but if they are giving them away for free....

Lol I kind of feel wrong, but if they are giving them away for free.... Nothing is for free. If they are giving them up for free it usually means that there is something wrong with them. You know how costly sick ferret bills can be, and they can rise fast! You know nothing about these ferrets and craigslist people are capital shady. I would never take in a ferret unless they first get checked out by a vet or I plan to pay for an exhorbant vet bill in worst case.

If the person intends for the animal to go to a good home, I do think its wrong to use them for food. That is a pet. Think of it as if someone fed a ferret to their boa. I may have misunderstood the post, if so, then let me know <3

Keep thinking----I did it for my babies, and try not to worry about it.

It's misleading if they're trying to find their pet a good home, but that's why we encourage people to have some sort of adoption fee to weed out people who only want a free pet. But then on the other hand when I went to the person's house to get my ferret, I wasn't going to pay their $100 "adoption fee" because her teeth were in bad shape and was going to cost me $300 to get a dental done. I was able to get her for $50 and she went to the vet the next week.

I dunno, I find it morally dubious. Did the people giving away these animals know that they were going to be used for food? Did you kill them humanely? I wouldn't like to know that someone gave away a pet ferret, thinking it was being rehomed, only to be eaten or skinned for its fur or something. Just because people are stupid and selfish doesn't mean that it's OK to kill their pets. On the other hand I do see your point. What is considered a pet is culturally variable. But I don't think I would do it without the consent of the "seller".

I think theres definitely a fine line between wrong and right for this one. Personally I don't think I could do that lol but I think as long as the "seller" or "giver" of said animal knows the fate of their ex furry friend then I guess it's fine. If people are posting that they need a forever home or a loving home for their pet because they can no longer care for it and you instead kill it and feed it to your ferret, that's a tid bit morbid lol. There's some people that breed rats and rabbits to use as food for their ferrets maybe that's a good idea that you could look into.

I'd be worried that they could be a contaminated food source. They could possibly have had some medicine or disease.

I do not think she should feel like she is a bad person for trying to feed her ferrets. A lot of times these animals are given away because people do not want to take care of them anymore. Sadly, they r tired of them, so free is the easist way to get rid of them.

@meagan, I really need to know- did you mean your are finding pets for free that you are then killing as food for your ferrets? Or meat for free, as I slightly freezer burned chicken, beef, etc?

Since you said you were getting them from the pet section, I am going to assume you mean you adopted these animals and have been feeding them to your existing pets.
If that is indeed the case, I have huge qualms with that. It is one thing to buy feeder animals from a source that breeds and sells those animals for feeder purposes (which is the best way to avoid contamination). It is a very different thing to adopt someone's pet, regardless of if it was free or not, and kill it. We've given away puppies for free because we knew they would not sell in our area and we could not afford to feed 13 dogs. Not all people give up their pets because they just don't care.
Regardless, just because someone doesn't care about their pet and is giving it up doesn't mean you should adopt it with the intention of using it as food (because "who will miss it", right? That is the vibe I'm picking up.), unless you discuss it with the owner before you pick up the animal.
I find this quite cruel.
