My Lil dudes have decreased how much they eat again. They only ate 4 oz combined yesterday. Their PM meal was hardly touched so I mixed in a duck egg this morning. They have also been sleeping a lot more. They ate alert and playful, just playing for shorter periods. Kaylas have been doing the same thing. I moved their cage nearer to the window for more natural light and stick the cage in front of the open door during the day for fresh air when they're not running around the room. They get as much out time as they like.

I'm sorry that I didn't check in yesterday. It's just been a crazy week.
Hooray for finding pork brains! I hope yours like it as much as mine do also. It's icky to deal with and looks just like brains so it's a bit creepy but mine sure love it.
Monday am: 3oz beef chunks with bone meal powder & crushed chicken neck Monday pm: 3oz chicken chunks with bone meal powder (retrieve chicken neck from kids toybox, disinfect EVERYTHING)
Tuesday am: 3oz beef chunks with bone meal powder & crushed frog legs Tuesday pm: 3oz chicken chunks with bone meal powder
Wednesday am: 3oz turkey heart Wednesday pm: 3oz beef chunks with bone meal powder
Friday am: 3oz chicken chunks Friday pm: ½ chicken heart + 1/4 lamb liver + 1/4 beef lung
(giggle) You do have a Saturday and Sunday meal in there...right?
Chicken and beef are the only muscle meats I have atm. Should I decrease chunks offered when I try to feed them bone in meals? On one hand I don't want them to get full and not eat it but on the other I don't want to make them go hungry if they aren't going to eat it anyway. Beef tongue would count as a muscle meat, yeah? If so, I'll substitute one of the days.
Your menu looks good but you do want to find some other proteins. As for decreasing the meat chunks, try leaving alot of meat on the bone so they have meat to eat and they also have to try the bone at the same time. They need to get familiar with having the bone there and they will.
Beef tongue is a muscle meat. It's full of Taurine and such a good way to get Iron and Vitamin B from a red meat meal for them.
Have you tried looking for quail or cornish game hen yet. That's a lovely small bone and even though cornish game hens are still just little chickens, they offer another flavor. I'd love to see you find duck gizzards or duck hearts for the nice fatty duck and to give you another protein source. They're inexpensive also and you get alot in a nice big package.

They seem like they're getting their lighter spring appetites but sleeping like it's still winter. I'm glad they're getting out as much as they like. You and Kayla do a wonderful job with making sure they have plenty of playtime and stimulation. That's just so important for our very smart little fuzzies.
I have a few errands to run today but I'll be on the next two days for much more than I've been this week. Then we go on Saturday to Louisville to see the college basketball game. It's something that my husband has always wanted to do and I get to stay in a lovely hotel and pretend that I'm in civilization again plus get my city fix.
Hugs to everyone and you're all doing so well. Really I mean that alot. It's a pleasure working with you and your sister and I'm so darn impressed with how well you all work together.

Thanks. I write my responses in my phones notepad so when I copy stuff over I sometimes make a mess of it. Kayla got another 60lb order from My Pet Carnivore today. That freezer is full to bursting! We were going to inventory it here in the next couple days and sit together to make a meal plan, probably a full month so we can work on all these brains and pancreas and spleen (oh, my!). Theres much more than that though! Including whole grounds.
Chicken n beef is just the muscle meat that I have left at home. End of the month and all that. Thanks to kayla we won't have to worry about organs at all for a good while so after the 1st I plan to stock up on a variety of muscle meats including small wings/drummettes, cornish hens, and quail.
I must say, ordering from My Pet Carnivore was a much more pleasant experience than ordering from Hare Today. It was packaged better, actually stayed frozen, and there was less prep time for me lol
Would it be helpful to copy our ferret meat inventory here? There's a couple things like "beef supreme" (ground beef meat, rib bones, heart, gullet, trachea, liver, n kidney) and whole ground duck that I don't quite know how to fit into the frankenprey menu. I can figure it out myself though, I'm sure. I've found one HF page that shows how to compensate for substitutions in the frankenprey model.

Wow, you guys have quite the inventory. That's interesting that MyPetCarnivore was a better company to work with. I'd love to try them but both companies are super high shipping to my area. You don't need to make a full listing but it will help to build a weekly menu for us to look at. Here is the chart for how to work frankenprey in with alternate meals like grinds. holisticferret60.proboards.com/thread/17989/balancing-frankenprey-diets-prey-grindsTake a look at it and then we can answer any questions you have.

I'll be in and out today but tomorrow we go to Louisville to see the Southern Regionals March Madness game. I won't take the computer but we will be back on Sunday. I don't know if maja01 celebrates Easter or if you do but have a lovely Easter weekend to both of you. Give all the fuzzies a big hug. :wave3:

I was a bit hesitant to bring it up after the Facebook HF page explosion but our Lil dudes tried live chicks today. Our men folk were hovering on standby to make sure the kills were clean and quick, which they were! Only baby had troubles with his grip but big sister Arya wandered over and quickly finished it before Hubby could.
I stocked up on bone in meals which was my missing piece. Sprang for a duck which about killed me, it was a bit over $20! I saw a lady in the UK got hers a lot cheaper. Lucky. Lol Also, 2 cornish hens and chicken wings. Now I have neck, spine, rib cages and drummettes, all crushed.
Today was organ day, they hated pork brain. Brats.
I am now fully ready to make my frankenprey menu. Holiday rush is over and tomorrow is prep and inventory day so that's a good time to do it.
Hope yall had a good weekend!

Monday am: crushed cornish hen ribs Monday pm: 4oz duck chunks with bone meal powder
Tuesday am: crushed duck wing Tuesday pm: 4oz tongue
Wednesday am: cornish hen wings Wednesday pm: lamb heart
Thursday am: duck spine Thursday pm: soup bones (for marrow) & frog legs
Friday am: salmon with bone meal powder Friday pm: ½ chicken heart + ¼ chicken liver + 1/4 slivers of lamb kidney
Saturday am: pork chunks with bone meal powder Saturday pm: pork chunks with duck egg
Sunday am: smashed cornish drummettes Sunday pm: ½ chicken liver + ½ lamb pancreas slivers
How is this? Is it too much bone meal if I'm only lightly dusting the meals? My dudes are steadily eating more meat though Aris is a brat about it. They completely polished off their chicks so I have hope

Hi. Sorry, I was away - my gastritis was really bad last week. During the day it was quite ok, but then in the afternoon it was horrible. Yesterday and the day before were only days that I went sleeping at my normla time and with (almost) no pain. I was at the doctor on friday, but for now they just put me on higher dose of omeprazole and if it will not be better in two weeks, I guess the gastroscopy awaits me ... The trigger for sure is stress, but if it will not be better we will have to look in if I didn't made myself a nice ulcer or something ... So, no real easter food for me this year since I am on pretty strict diet (there are only few foods that don't make it worse, so I stick to those few for now). Hope you had good holidays! I am not really fond of feeding live prey - I think os no need to (but this is just my personal opinion), but if they killed it clean ... it is ok. Good girl Arya (she is quite up to her name, isn't she ). Just keep in mind, that young chicks are treat, they should not really be a large part of a diet. Like all young animals, they lack in calcium, plus the ratio of meat, organs, ... is different than in adults. But it is really good to feed animals in different size and age stages - the same as in wild. The wild animals don't only prey on only adults, they also eat pinkies and youngsters in between. The menue looks really good, but you can omit the bone powder on meat chunks. They have quite enough bone in meat meals. If the poop will be too soft we can still add it later. The only thing - bone for soup are to large for ferrets (if I imagine the right bones - big cow/claf bones). They can not really eat it. They get the marrow in all the smaller bones you have on the list. Gizzards are also great for meat meals - they are quite "cool" as they are very tender muscle and they must chew quite hard. That way the chewing musculature get stronger. How is Aris doing with his bone chewing? btw, I will prepare a quizz in the evening So that we will cover some theory

btw, for the brains - you can for start give it in smaller meals (give first some smaller amount of brain and when they eat it, give the other part of meal f.i. liver) or you can mix a part of brain with hearts and make soupie out of it.

Ouch! I hope the medicine kicks in for you. Feel better!
I had the bone meal powder in there because they aren't eating enough bone yet but I'll decrease it. As for soup bones, I give them because they like to lick out the marrow for a treat. That's why I paired them with frog legs which they do finish and they haven't had frog in awhile.
I'm going to have to measure their food carefully this week because they're eating a bit less and get new weights. I should have done that already :/

Quizze time 1. Does freezing degrade taurine? 2. Your ferret's stools are loose/soft. What is this a sign of and how can you adjust to fix it? 3. How many meals a week should be organ, and of those meals how much needs to be liver? 4. How much and how often can egg be fed? 5. About how long is a ferret's digestion time? 6. What is a healthy diet item that can be used for hairballs, and his often should you give it? 7. True or False: It is best to give my ferrets meals and put the food away when they are done. (Explain why)
