I found this video on youtube and decided to give it a go, since I'd heard a few other people on various forums use this method. I would absolutely suggest this, and I've only been using it for about six hours! If you can't load the video or want a short breakdown: Buy a 20x20 inch box fan ( about 17$ at Lowes), and a 20x20 inch filter with a ranking of 12 or higher on the MERV scale. It tells you on the box, and they tend to be about 8-10$ at Wal-Marts and Home Depot. Here's one that's a bit more pricey but it also strongly filters bacteria, it'd be great for large mice or rat colonies. Take some duct tape and tape the edges onto the back of the fan, plug it in. The video shows the decrease of general grossness in the air by 90% using this method, and everyone I've talked to who has used it reported that their animals seemed to be healthier (less respiratory issues), and that they themselves could tell the difference. I have very poor functioning lungs, and setting up one in my room has not only completely eliminated any slight smell, but I actually am able to breathe much more clearly than normal! I'd really recommend it, especially if you keep mice or rats or other particularly smelly animals. Can't think of any other pets that might be labeled as stinky, but I'm sure there are.

It sounds like a home-made air purifier. I have a purifier in my room and in my ferrets' room and it seems to help a little bit. A benefit of getting a purifier is you have extra options, mine for example each have a separately replaceable carbon pre-filter, a HEPA filter and a UV-C light to kill bacteria.

It's really helping me, since my lungs are so dang sensitive.

I will have to make one of these for every room in my apartment! I'm severely asthmatic, and my landlords don't change the furnace filter And in the warmer months I get by leaving the whole apartment open. However -13°c not window open weather. I will have to make a few of these & give it a try. I have a air purifier, but I don't find it works that well

A box fan with an air filter tightly taped over the output end would probably move quite a bit more air than a standard air purifier.
