Hey! Sorry I’ve been pretty busy this week too. I know how you feel about leaving them. I feel terrible when I am away from my fuzzies for more than a day. I always imagine I will come back and they will think I abandoned them. Haha! They are all doing really well. No allergic reactions, they’re getting chunky, and still as playful as ever. The only problem is stealing food. Apparently both Tauntaun and Wampa are stealing from each other. I just feel bad for Ezio. She is so sweet; she will just let them have it. 1. Ferret's name: Ezio 2. Ferret's weight: 1 lb 11 oz 3. Ferret has eaten "X" amount on average per meal. 1 -2 oz per meal 4. Stools on various proteins. Small 5. Activity levels: Very active 6. Weekly menu:Monday: AM- Pork Buttons PM- Goat Spleen & Chicken Livers Tuesday: AM- Pork Buttons PM- Turkey Necks Wednesday: AM- Lamb Hearts PM- Turkey Necks Thursday: AM- Cornish Game Hen PM- Turkey Necks Friday: AM- Turkey Necks PM- Lamb Hearts, Goat Spleen, & Chicken Livers Saturday: AM- Cornish Game Hen PM- Turkey Necks Sunday: AM- Minced Pork PM- Turkey Necks 1. Ferret's name: Tauntaun 2. Ferret's weight: 2 lb 6 oz (gained) 3. Ferret has eaten "X" amount on average per meal. 1 -2 oz per meal 4. Stools on various proteins. Small, dime-sized 5. Activity levels: Active 1. Ferret's name: Wampa 2. Ferret's weight: 3 lb 0 oz 3. Ferret has eaten "X" amount on average per meal. 3 -4 oz per meal 4. Stools on various proteins. Normal 5. Activity levels: Very active

Stealing food is such a ferret thing to do. Even my guys do it sometimes, mainly at wholeprey meals (sigh, the other day they ripped it in half fighting over one) Maybe getting a few eating dens may help. Either way, a ferret steals food, eats his share then stashes it for another to come find. As long as they get a good amount of food for the three then you won't worry about one missing out. I bet Ezio will learn to stick up for her share eventually. My littlest used to get hers stolen from the boys as well, now she does the stealing. You're menu looks great, if you feel up to graduating, I could submit your Menu for grading if you would like? I will also give you your final exam in the meantime. What do you think? (giggle)

Yes! I am excited to graduate!!!! I am ready for my final exam. Oh okay, so I shouldn't bother with them if Wampa steals food from Ezio? I think she is getting enough, but I just feel so bad that she gets it ripped out of her mouth. I'm being a protective mama. Lol.

I think she is getting enough, but I just feel so bad that she gets it ripped out of her mouth. I'm being a protective mama. Lol. Yay!! I submitted your menu for grading. It would be best to let them figure out who eats what. I can totally understand what its like! I wish they could all just share and behave hehe. Usually the "alpha" ferret gets first dibs and first to eat. It could be that Wampa is testing Ezio. Usually females are "alpha" ferrets in a business, so maybe she'll stick up for her share eventually. Wampa is such a gutsy heheheheheh I love that about kits. Here is your final exam. 1. If you run out of hearts, what are some good emergency taurine sources? 2. If you run out of Bone in meat, what are 2 acceptable bone substitutes for temporary use and how much should your ferrets get? (be specific with your answer) 3. How many meals a week should be organ, and of those meals how much needs to be liver? 4. How many different proteins does a ferret need in a week at a minimum? (Explain) 5. Is it best to feed the egg whites, egg yolk, or the entire egg? 6. How often on average does a ferret need to eat? 7. Are leaner meats better for your ferret or fattier meats? (Explain) 8. How long does each type of meat generally stay good: raw soup, ground meat, med-large chunks, bone-in meats, whole prey? 9. Write a basic summary of doing a protein elimination. I have to run off now and do house chores. Big hugs to Tauntaun, Wampa & Ezio for doing so well~

1. If you run out of hearts, what are some good emergency taurine sources? Brains, tongue, and dark muscle meats like thighs.
2. If you run out of Bone in meat, what are 2 acceptable bone substitutes for temporary use and how much should your ferrets get? (be specific with your answer) ½ to ¾ tsp bone meal or crushed egg shell per meal.
3. How many meals a week should be organ, and of those meals how much needs to be liver? Three meals a week should be organ; One heart meal, One ½ heart & ½ liver meal, and ½ heart, ¼ liver, & ¼ other organ meal.
4. How many different proteins does a ferret need in a week at a minimum? (Explain) Ferrets need a minimum of three proteins; they ensure that there is variety and the diet is completely balanced.
5. Is it best to feed the egg whites, egg yolk, or the entire egg? Entire Egg.
6. How often on average does a ferret need to eat? Every 3-4 hours.
7. Are leaner meats better for your ferret or fattier meats? (Explain) Fattier meats, because fat is where a ferret gets their energy from in their diet.
8. How long does each type of meat generally stay good: raw soup, ground meat, med-large chunks, bone-in meats, whole prey? Soups - 6-8 hrs, Grinds - 8-12 hrs, Chunks - 10-24 hrs depending on the size Bone-in meats - 12-24 hrs Whole prey - up to 48 hrs
9. Write a basic summary of doing a protein elimination.
An elimination diet is eliminating all but one protein and slowly introducing new foods. The first step is to switch your ferret to one novel protein (A protein they’ve never had before) or a protein that your ferret is familiar with that doesn’t cause a reaction. Letting them only eat that protein for 1-2 weeks. When their symptoms have cleared up, then you can slowly reintroduce the other proteins ONE at a time to see which one was causing the reaction. Keep a variety in the ferret’s diet of foods that don’t cause inflammation.

1. Brains, tongue, and dark muscle meats like thighs.Correct! Great work! The best back up would be tongue and brains. Also a Taurine supplement is alright for a temporary use. 2. ½ to ¾ tsp bone meal or crushed egg shell per meal. Correct! 3. Three meals a week should be organ; One heart meal, One ½ heart & ½ liver meal, and ½ heart, ¼ liver, & ¼ other organ meal.Close! It's two 'organ' meals, however, you are correct with the organ/liver meals and the amounts needed. It's the single heart meal which is considered a muscle meal rather than an organ meal. Heart is always considered a muscle in raw feeding. Great job! 4. Ferrets need a minimum of three proteins; they ensure that there is variety and the diet is completely balanced. Correct and fantastic answer! 5. Entire Egg. Correct! You can also feed just the yolk, but never feed whites on their own. The entire egg is always best anyway since it is completely balanced. 6. Every 3-4 hours. Correct!7. Fattier meats, because fat is where a ferret gets their energy from in their diet. Correct! You're too good! 8. Soups - 6-8 hrs, Grinds - 8-12 hrs, Chunks - 10-24 hrs depending on the size Bone-in meats - 12-24 hrs Whole prey - up to 48 hrs

Fantastic Summary!! Well done!! We'll wait and see how your submitted menu goes and if all is okay, you'll be graduated in no time. Keep in mind, if you ever need help or advice, I'm always here and easily contactable, along with other mentors. I'm now off to go into town so I'll check in later. Big hugs to everyone~

fuzzie In regards to your menu, Heather mentioned that your bone content may be alittle high. Is the Cornish game hen a muscle meat or a bone in meat? How are the stools?

It was muscle meat. Their stools are not seedy, they are normal.

Congratulations :stpatrick: You've graduated and you're ready to walk this path alone You have the foundation to help you feed your fuzzes in a more natural and healthy manner. Please remember that your learning never stops, and your ferret's dietary needs change from ferret to ferret and throughout each their lives. If at any time you need assistance you need only PM your mentor for any assistance. The list is also a very good resource and you should always be aware that it's available to answer any questions you may have either about diet or care. Good luck, in a few days Sherry will lock down this thread and place it in the archives but be aware that you can always look through it as a reference tool but you just will not be able to post to it once it's locked down. Your mentor will be in to congratulate you shortly :thankyou: :wave3: ciao

Congratulations fuzzie! Tauntaun and Ezio have especially done a tremendous job throughout this switch. Wampa also has done fantastic and I'm so happy you got him on raw so quickly. I hope that Tauntaun doesn't have any other protein sensitivities from now on. Maybe you could try the beef another time in the future, but either way you have done such a great job with everyone and I'm sure they will continue to take proteins easily from now on. You're a fantastic ferrent, I do hope you stick around the forum, I would love to hear more about your wonderful three. Well done!
