My poor little biscotti was at the vet today for bloody urine. X-rays showed he has a bladder stone and needs surgery that's booked for Tuesday to remove the stone. I feel so bad for my little guy

Gosh, so sorry about that. Did vet suggest anything to prevent them?

Once removed, diet should be changed. In g. pigs stones are mostly formed becuse of too high calcium content of the food.

I had a Guinea pig in the past that had a stone so all my Guinea pigs since than have been on a low calcium diet, very little pellets, grass hay instead of Timothy hay, and lots of veggies. The only thing my vet said that I asked was it could be the water so they are all getting distilled water for now on. But my vet said its so common for Guinea pigs to get bladder stone especially males around 3 years old and that's biscotti

yes it is pretty common. it is also suggested that it might be some genetic predisponed thing going on.
Good luck with suregery! Hope it will all go ok!

Mine get limited pellets, hay, filtered water, and an array of vegetables and fruits. I think the vegetables moisture content helps prevent a lot of problems.

So biscotti is spending the night at emergency vet and than going in the am back to his regular vet. Poor guy was hardly urinsting. Emergency vet is watching him and probably going to catcher him. My poor pig . I'm hoping my regular vet can get him in earlier to do his surgery

I'll have to ask my vet again. My vet is boarding him until he has surgery Tuesday and than a few days after that. He loves the staff and they take great care of him lots of cuddles. I no he's in great hands and trust them 100% but I miss my cuddle bug

Finally was able to pick biscotti up from the vet today. He had his surgery Wednesday and is doing ok. Not pooping so much but on meds which is helping and getting critical care as a supplement feeding. I'm happy to have my little guy home!!!

What pellets do you feed? Most pellets contain calcium carbonate, which is what most bladder stones are made of. I used to give my girls Oxbow but it would always cause excess calcium in one of my girls urine (and she has had a stone before so this was a big concern) even though she only gets a couple tablespoons a day. I switched them over to KMS, which uses a different form of calcium, and that made a big difference. Also avoid romaine lettuce. Its not high in calcium or oxalic acid, but for whatever reason it seems to contribute to sludge/stones.
