I thought I should tell you guys the story of my first ferret Florence who I had at the age of 7 when she was 7 weeks old. She was born 14th April 2006 and died 14 September 2014.
I still remember purchasing her from her breeder like it was yesterday, I entered the back garden with my dad to pick up my grandads Father's Day present which was a small albino jill which was aggressive, my dad saw a sandy (cinnamon) jill with some fitch (sable) kits and asked about them, the women said that they were all reserved except for two. My dad said I could have one so he let me pick which one, there was a fat one and a runt which tried to attack my dad through the bars of the cage when he put his hand near the cage. I handled them both for a short while then to the woman's surprise I picked the smaller one. When we got home with the albino kit and my fitch kit, we housed them separately so that my fitch one could get some fat on her as she was the runt. A few hours after them settling in, I handles them both, the albino with cautions as it was aggressive and my fitch jill, I didn't get bit by the albino but I did by my fitch kit. Now I was deciding what to call my fitch kit, at first she was called Cola and the other was Lemonade, after a few days I changed their names as I didn't think their names suited them so they were renamed Snowdrop and Dusty. I changed my fitch kits name again after a short while from Dusty to Florence, I named her after the place in Italy, that was it, I was settled on that name for her and it wasn't changing anymore. She never bit me after the first time.
Florence grew up into a very loyal ferret that took a disliking to strangers and would always bite and latch onto them so I told people that they couldn't hold her. When her first season came, she stayed in season until that winter and then she came out naturally, she never developed aplastic anaemia, her second, third and fourth season she was jill jabbed, at the age of 5 she learned to hate the vet so we had her implanted. A year after her implant I took her to her first show at the British ferret club where she didn't do to well but while she was there, they nicknamed her "The Frolicking War Dancer". That same year my grandads ferret Snowdrop died, she lived with Florence so she became lonely so the year after I got Jasper and took them both to the British ferret club show again and they didn't do very well so the year after that I decided to try the Ashfield ferret club and they did much better there.
In 2014 I got Willow, Whisper and Bandit but Florence tried to kill them so they were housed separately, I think she didn't like them because she didn't want them near her man, Jasper. Around June in 2014, Jasper was taken to the vet because he developed adrenal disease so he got treatment for that, a few months later Florence started vomitting violently and stopped eating, the vet said that they couldn't do anything except put her to sleep. I took her back home with me, me and my dad helped her survive a month longer than she was expected to live, during this time I knew she wasn't going to make it as she kept falling asleep on me even though she wasn't a cuddly ferret at all but that didn't stop me from loving her.
One very early morning, my dad went to go and give her some mushy food but she wouldn't eat it and her body was cold, he decided bring her inside to warm her up a little, she hated my dad and this was the only time she didn't bite him, I was asleep at this time. Later that day, at 4:39pm, I was at school half way into my GCSEs and my dad rang me to tell me that he had found Florence dead with Jasper still curled around her. You can imagine how heartbroken I was that the pet I grew up with had died, I was depressed for months, my heart still aches when I think about her not being here.
Florence was my inspiration to start my YouTube channel about ferrets and polecats, part of her nickname is my channel name and my holistic ferret forum name, she is my profile picture on all social media and on here too.
