Hello everyone! Merry (almost) Christmas and Happy Holidays!! My question is about fostering, is it advisable for a first time ferret parent? What are the unique challenges involved? I ask because my boyfriend and I have been making plans to adopt ferrets for a few years now and it's never happened because life keeps getting in the way (school, moves ect) Well now, we're looking at moving to Ottawa and I've been poking around on thier shelter website and they seem to run solely on foster families and I started wondering wether we might make good foster parents. I think it would be a great way to help out ferrets in need and get to be "foster ferret parents" I'm just not sure they'd let us foster because we'd be first timers. Any thoughts on first timers as fosters are very welcome Thanks for your help!

Talk to the shelter operators, and go and see what ferrets they have available. Fostering is basically the same as owning them. So when you go to see which ones you can take, see that you have the right chemistry with your foster ferrets, and if the fit is right, the step from fostering to adoption should not be a very big one. As first time owners it is great to be in touch with the shelter anyways, so you can always ask them for some guidance or advice. (or you can ask on here as well ) It's great to have someone you can call and ask, who is nearby, and who you are familiar with. Also you should be aware that ferrets are not cheap pets to have, mostly because of their vet bills. As they age you should be prepared to give them the treatment they need for their ailments. Most people put aside some money, in case of emergencies.

Thanks sveta! yeh I'm looking forward to the move and making connections over there. I definitely plan on having a fair amount set aside (besides purchase costs, we've started collecting things already ) we've been researching and preparing for quite a while now, the times just never been right and we want to be ready, fingers crossed things will work out once were settled in Ottawa That's encouraging though! Thank you! I read the page on fostering (on the shelter site) and they don't say that you have to have had ferrets before, just that you're properly equipped now and ready. Thanks for the advice ~K

Hopefully it works out Fostering is a great help to any shelter, and it takes the ferrets to a home environment which is always better than being in a shelter. Hopefully they let you take some home. Ask for a personal meeting or two, so that they can see what you are like. They might not just give them out to anybody, but if they get to know you then it always helps a lot. If they don't want to let them out to you at first you can always volunteer and help them, and then it will also let you know which one you want, and what they're like.
