Sunday:(duck) AM, chicken egg snack, lamb muscle meat I also wanted to clarify, was the Sunday AM Duck a Muscle meat or a Bone in meat? Bone in meat. I try to do one bone in and one muscle on a day to keep it pretty balanced. Otherwise I get irregular poops. Either too runny or too dusty.

FINAL EXAM TIME! 1. What are some emergency taurine sources if you run out or cannot get any heart? Tongue and brains, but beef tongue is the most readily available option in my area.2. Why is cooking meat generally considered inadvisable? One reason is during the cooking process a lot of the nutrients and vitamins needed are cooked out, and if the meat where to contain bones. The cooked bones would lead to splintering which could be a possible health hazard.3. Which protein is high in Iron and Vitamin B? Lungs, but that's not a protein so beef.4. What is actually an "organ", but is considered a muscle meat when it comes to raw feeding? Gizzards?5. Give 2 examples each of muscle meat, edible bones, and organs. Muscle meats: Chicken breasts, boneless turkey thigh meat Edible bones: CGH all, Rabbit ribs organs: Beef liver, pork kidney
6. List 3 organs aside from liver. Kidney, Spleen and brains7. How many organ meals should a ferret be consuming per week? 2 meals; 1/2 hearts, 1/4 liver, 1/4 other and 1/2 liver, 1/2 other8. How many different proteins minimum does a ferret need in a week? minimum of 3 different proteins a week9. Your ferret is shedding and coughing a lot lately from ingesting hairs, what can you give him to help ease the shedding process? Raw chicken egg helps to lubricate their intestinal track pulling hairs away from the sides and also adds fluids to the stomach to prevent the formation of hairballs. Also brushing or pulling your hands through their fur to help and collect the loose fur and maybe get rid of the itches.10. Is it okay to give ferrets Lactose Free Milk or Goats Milk? NO.11. What should you give as a blockage protocol to a ferret who has swallowed a foreign object? you should follow the blockage protocol: first 1 Tbsp of pureed canned pumpkin (no sugars) 1hr later 1 tsp of pure Vaseline 1hr later 1 Tbsp of pureed canned pumpkin (no sugars) 1hr later 1 tsp of pure Vaseline and check their poops, if it purists seek vet attention as it can be fatal
12. What makes Salmonella and E.coli highly unlikely to cause an issue for ferrets? Due to ferrets having an extremely fast metabolism (3-4 hrs) the salmonella and E. coli bacteria don't have enough time to germinate, and there is bacteria within the ferrets digestive track.13. What is Trichinella spirals and where can it be found? Trichinella Spirals is an ingested disease, responsible for Trichinosis "pork worms" and mainly found in Wild boar/pigs (non FDA) but its also been found in other proteins like Rodents. horses, bears and humans (not that i feed any of those to my ferrets)14. What could cause a Vitamin A Toxicity in ferrets? Over feeding liver is most likely the main cause to Vitamin A toxicity as liver contain high amounts of Vitamin A and that's why its suggested that liver is 5% of their organ diet intake.Extra Credit: How many ferrets does it take to change a light bulb? Now this is a tricky one, do the ferrets have a ladder to hop up. if not lets take an average number for the standard height of a normal household room, which is about 10-12 feet tall. If i have 9 and a half 15 inch long ferrets, they would touch the ceiling so really id be fine with 9 15 in long ferrets as the light would have to hang lower than the ceiling. But lets throw a kit up there to do the hard work of unscrewing a light bulb, now just imagine 9 ferrets and a kit standing on each others shoulders while changing a light bulb its preposterous!! Thanks again for being a fantastic mentor

Also lets say i would maybe be interested in time doing Whole prey would i have to sign up for the mentoring program again or would i message here? will this thread be deleted and become unavailable to me, if so could it stay up a few days so i could re copy all of the lessons that were made available to me. Also i had a few questions food wise and i suppose i should message them here as i have a food mentor....so here they go and sorry i thought of these after the final exam and im graduating. 1. have you ever given a ferret a whole chicken egg as like food enrichment allowing them to bite into it and break it apart to eat, it would also give them a source of egg shells as well. or do the egg shells haveto be dried first and smashed before a ferret can ingest them? 2. also insects, would they be considered a protein ferrets could eat. The exotic pet store near me suggested feeding my ferrets cockroaches. I know some fox species like fennec foxes are insectivores and insectivores are a sub category to carnivores so i wasn't sure. possibly as a snack??? Also i was going to post these in my ferret 101 thread as i wasnt sure if you'd know but i can always copy paste it in.

Congratulations  You've graduated and you're ready to walk this path alone :wave3:. You have the foundation to help you feed your fuzzes in a more natural and healthy manner. Please remember that your learning never stops, and dietary needs change from ferret to ferret and throughout each their lives as you're finding out with your own business. You've mentioned the possibility of going to whole prey. This you can do, you need only PM your mentor for any assistance or set up a switching thread on the board. I would like you to be aware that though you now have the capability and the knowledge to create your little ones diets, you are never alone and that your mentor (you need only pm) is always available to you. The list is also a very good resource and you should always be aware that it's available to answer any questions you may have either about diet or care. Good luck, in a few days Sherry will lock down this thread and place it in the archives but be aware that you can always look through it as a reference tool but you just will not be able to post to it once it's locked down. Your mentor will be in to congratulate you shortly :thankyou:
ciao

Congrats on Graduating Bonbon! This thread will be locked and archived (so not deleted, you can always come back and reference it if needed), Feel free to start your own thread in the whole prey section and we can help you out where needed with whole prey. ;u; The boys should have no issue in my opinion. 1. have you ever given a ferret a whole chicken egg as like food enrichment allowing them to bite into it and break it apart to eat, it would also give them a source of egg shells as well. or do the egg shells haveto be dried first and smashed before a ferret can ingest them? You could try that. It may be messy but it would be great enrichment providing they know what to do rofl. You could add little crack and see how they go. I've heard others do this with Quail eggs. (which are a perfect little size for ferrets) In the wild, ferrets would do that if they came across any eggs. I'm not too sure if they would ingest the egg shell, but they might. The only reason we dry out egg shells is for the purpose of grinding them down to a powder. It simply makes things easier. ;u; 2. also insects, would they be considered a protein ferrets could eat. The exotic pet store near me suggested feeding my ferrets cockroaches. I know some fox species like fennec foxes are insectivores and insectivores are a sub category to carnivores so i wasn't sure. possibly as a snack??? I'm not too sure on cockroaches. Ferrets can eat Insects though. I think they would make a good treat. I hear some people give mealworms as treats sometimes. I haven't tried it, but it would be fun to see. Great job on your final exam! 4. What is actually an "organ", but is considered a muscle meat when it comes to raw feeding? Gizzards?
Close, but I was looking for Heart. Good job though! Extra Credit: How many ferrets does it take to change a light bulb? Great answer! You did very well on your exam, congratulations once again on graduating! It was so much fun mentoring you! Feel free to stick around the forum and if you have any concerns or questions don't hesitate to send me a PM ~ :goodjob:

thanks for being such a great mentor. I do plan to stick around the form, i have plenty of questions and i like learning about what i can do best for my fuzzbutts. Plus i enjoy meeting/talking/and seeing others ferrets. I'm sure we will keep in touch as i have you on a few social media things.
number 4 was really hard because i went back and fourth between hearts and gizzards. I thought hearts were an organ because they pump blood and i remembered we talked about gizzards early on in my mentoring and you told me they weren't an organ because they didn't secrete anything, which is more than likely why its my answer. I hope to see you around on the forums and i'll be keeping in touch with you. Also as an ending weight for both the boys, Bonbon is 2 lbs 12 oz (no change) and Benji.....is a whopping 3 lbs 10 oz He is getting so big and long. I'm surprised at how big hes getting, especially with being a Marshall's i would have imagined being neutered so young he would get that big.
Anyways Thank you again for taking the time to mentor me, to help my ferrets have a longer healthier and happier life. keep in touch!
