I have 2 ferrets that I just got. Well, when we got them, they had fleas so bad that they were badly anemic and near death. After washing them at least 5 times, there were still hundreds of fleas! So my vet decided the best thing would be to shave them I know this is very bad for them, so I want it to grow back ASAP. Does anyone have any tips?

I'm curious as to why the vet opted to shave them vs a topical flea treatment such as Revolution.
A raw diet will go a long ways to helping their coat grow in thick & fluffy.

Have they already been shaved?
what about topical treatments? I may be wrong, but I think Revolution, and Advantage medications work for these cases.
Hopefully someone who has more experience can chime in soon.
Otherwise there are oatmeal baths, and maybe some coconut oil on their skin to soothe them?

Yes, they have already been shaved. They are acting better already. They are also taking liquid iron supplements.

I think it is a good idea if revolution takes a few days to get in system and at least you could see them to get rid of them before transferring over to new home.

So they are already bald now, poor fuzzies, this doesn't sound like it has been a fun experience for them.
I think you should check them daily that their skin doesn't get too dry. Also look out for any rash or infection they could get from being shaved.
Sudocream is good for a rash.

supplemental melatonin has helped several of ours regrow fur lost as a result of adrenal disease. We also now give it prophylactically to everyone and their winter coats have never been softer. I can't say if it will help grow back shaved fur, but it won't hurt.

While it will grown back some, especially if on a proper diet, odds of it coming back fully in before next season shed are pretty remote. If you are lucky they have not started winter shed yet.

Poor wee mites, I've never heard of a vet resorting to shaving a ferret. We can only hope that it was before their major coat change, otherwise they're probably going to be basically naked until their next shed. They will probably put on some fuzz the their real coat won't grow in until their next shed. People who've had their ferrets shaved for surgeries have noticed this. I would have thought that using advantage or revolution for a couple of months would have been the better way to go ciao

Heather, I was wondering the exact same thing :/ I had a female I rescued years ago who came to me with horrid fleas & we were instructed to treat her with Kitten revolution every 3 weeks for 2 months.

2 months is a long time for a ferret suffering anemia to endure more bites. Now the baby can recuperate more quickly. At least there will never be another bite from a flea:)) I would do it . Beauty is only skin deep. I know ugly is to the bone

Hey, Na-kids are cute. It's not about the loss of the fur. Shaving damages their coat, sometimes the damage is forever. It can also cause huge emotional stress. It has nothing to do with how they look. If I honestly thought that this was the only way, I wouldn't have questioned it. I just think this was not a good choice ciao

Well what's done is done, and it was the vet's treatment recommendation.
So now we can only recommend recovery advice, and maybe other options for any future problems like this.
How are the ferrets doing by the way?

clarifying Would never suggest a sick(naked) ferret ugly, that is why I separated clause lower down page, just adding rest of joke for humour, and not making fun of anyone ---as my pretty days have come and gone.
