When I moved into my rental, the first thing I did before setting up the ferret room is go and pick up enough linoleum to roll out over the carpet in the entire room, even rolled it up the wall 3 inches. it costed about $50 this way I know there will be no damage to the carpet in that room. Where did you buy that? Sounds very inexpensive.

My ten drink out of a square deepish litter tray that cost me £1. Its heavy enough they can't move it much and holds enough water that even with snorkeling etc its never emptied. I've noticed since I've been using this none of them go silly making a mess with the water like they did beforehand.

Now that the bottom of their pen is water proof I might try putting a large dish of water in the kiddie pool in their pen.

I am happy to hear your problem was resolved. I must tell you this:
You can always super-simple DIY a sizable square of tiles (using a heavy duty tarp as a base) and simply place large tiles in a corner of your area, tightly fit together. If it's a small enough area, you could even seal the tiles with aquarium sealant, which is clear and waterproof. Holds tough. And I'm meaning, heavy 1'x1' tiles - outdoor use. That would create a nice area that he may not need to feel to scoop the water off of.
I suggest this because my dog is a big mess maker with his water, and we have a tiled area for a wood stove in my house, but we do not have a wood stove. So his water dish is there, easy mop clean!

I'm not worried about it anymore. The bottom of their pen is water proof and I just change out towels/blankets/etc. to keep things clean. Rusty still enjoys scooting the spill-proof water bowl around on the floor. He gets himself wet, but doesn't ever manage to tip it over or even dig any significant amount of it out.

Baltimore digs, snorkels, flips the bowl...everything. I bought a bowl that attaches to the cage (in the bird section at my pet store), and although it is awkward for them to drink out of because it is pretty high up, they have adapted very well. Baltimore still tried to play in it, but because it's harder to get to it's not as fun to play with. He is still able to, though, but I also noticed that if I only add half an inch or so of water at a time he doesn't find it as interesting. Because I clean it and refill every morning and night (even elevated, they still find ways to get bits of raw in it), only having a half inch of water is no problem and they don't run out.
