Please confirm that you are 18 years of age or older: yes, I am 28
1. Where did you first learn about natural diets for ferrets?
Researching the best diet possible for my first ferret.
2. Please describe the type of diet you would like assistance in switching your ferret(s) to. Be sure to include if you are interested in feeding whole prey (live or frozen-thawed) and if you are wanting to FULLY switch to a natural diet or PARTIALLY. If you are unsure what kind of diet you want to put your ferrets on, please express that and we can help you find the best type of natural diet for your ferret.
Anything but whole animals. I am not sure if I can give her a full baby chick or mouse. So maybe freinkenprey or how ever it's spelled.
3. Why are you interested in switching your ferrets to a natural diet?
To give wisp the best quality of life that I can possibly give her. I got her right after my miscarriage, so she is my surrogacy baby girl. She means everything to me, so she deserves the best I can give her.
4. Do you understand that switching your ferret to a natural diet can be a lengthy, arduous process? Its not an overnight switch. It requires a commitment of several months at minimum. Your HF Mentor will be more then happy to assist you in switching your ferret(s) to a natural diet, but you need to be equally as committed. The switch takes time and effort every single day. It can also be extremely frustrating at times. If you aren't willing to tough out a potentially lengthy switching process, you have major life changes approaching (baby on the way, moving, starting school, getting married/divorced, etc), or limited time due to work, then it might be a better idea to wait on switching your ferret's diet until you have more time. Are you willing and realistically able to make the neccessary time commitment?
Yes
5. How many ferrets do you currently have? What are their names? Ages? Genders? Do they have any health problems? Are they overweight? Underweight? How long have you had each ferret for?
Right now, I only have my little girl, Wisp. She is approx 6 months. Not positive due to being her second owner, but she was around 2-3 months when I got her according to the vet's estimate. She doesn't have any health problems and is a little bit heavy for a wee girl, but lean looking. Last vet check, she weighed 1.3 lbs. I have had her for 4 months.
6. What diet do you currently feed your ferrets? (Please include all treats, supplements, etc) Do they already eat some form of soup?
She is fed freeze dried raw cat food (it's chicken with either venison, rabbit (she hates it alone but will eat it mixed), Turkey), egg shells ground up in the am for replacement of bone and plain at night, and occasionally gets a raw egg maybe 1 time a week mixed with her food, now mixing ground veal to try and introduce her to meat. She also gets freeze dried turkey chunks as a treat 2-3 times a week, sometimes only once. She also gets hairball preventative every other week or so while I clip her nails and clean her ears.
7. Have you ever tried to switch your ferrets to a natural diet in the past? If yes, what happened?
Yes, swapped her from kibble to freeze dried food and that's what she eats now. The entire process took about 5 days from straight kibble to willingly eating freeze dried.
8. What additional information about yourself or your ferrets would you like to share?
I am ready to take the next step towards getting her on raw meat. She was very easy to swap from kibble and has only taken one day to accept the veal being mixed in. So I would like to keep things moving along. Due to financial constraints, the freeze dried food is getting expensive and I am not willing to sacrifice health over cheap kibble. Even though I don't care for the meat process, due to being vegan, I accept the fact that wisp has to have meat. And as stated above, I want nothing more than to give her the best. I do not foresee any major problems with switching her, but it would be nice to have the support just in case. Even if I don't meet the requirements for a mentor, I am still going to continue to try to provide her with everything she needs. I have been doing reasearch, watching blogs and videos, and trying to get as much information about raw feeding as possible. With that reasearch, I found this forum.
9. How often during the week do you have access to a computer?
An actual computer, not alot. But internet, all the time.
10. Please post a picture of each of your ferrets (if possible).
Not able to post any.
11. Have you met the requirements for this program? Are you at least 18 years of age? Do you have your scale, a place to access meats, hearts, livers, etc?
I will be getting a scale very soon and I have a couple of butchers whom I have contacted as well as the store that I buy wisp's food from has all sorts of meats/organs as it is a holistic pet store. And last resort, there are tons of grocery stores and I have a food processor.
