That looks a bit like a MCT. A Mast Cell tumor. They are usually benign and rather common. I'm linking two threads for you. holisticferret.proboards.com/thread/4528/itching-mast-cell-tumorsholisticferret60.proboards.com/thread/13600/mast-cell-tumorsGomez is just so beautiful. I love any and all pictures of him. The picture of the deer was simply lovely. I never get use to seeing them around here. Your feeding station is amazing. Now I want one. Your little fellow is working on that wing. He'll get there, just keep working with him and he'll be munching on it soon enough. Gizzards help build jaw strength, so try to work in a gizzard meal to help him along. Mine love duck gizzards. That gives me pricey duck for an inexpensive price plus another protein. The next few days are tough but I'll check in as often as I can. Tag someone if you need some immediate help and I know Machan will also check in. Hugs to little Gomez. He's right on track and you all are doing very very well. :wave3:

Waving from NH....I am going to try the 1% hydrocortisone and see how it does, have any of your had one? He does itch alot.
We've tried gizzards with him and he does not care for those or pork either it seems. I thought the same thing that they would help build jaw strength. Will try some more as we have some.
Today was soupie making day, 2 batches every Sunday lol. He is such a good boy and very handsome. I saw we won the Oct caption contest, sweet. So tomorrow you do November and we pick a photo or you do? Have a good week and rest up, talk soon

Do mast cell tumors usually lead to adrenal fuzzies?

Hi! Have you tried giving Gomez some gizzards? Gizzards are a fantastic muscle meat and help with building jaw strength. He's been doing well with the tip by nibbling at it. It does take some time until he can eat it on his own, but you're both doing your best. Next time you leave it in the condo, try cutting them up in small pieces and drizzle some oil if needed. I noticed when i started on tips that my guys wouldn't touch it in their cage if it was whole. This would also give you both some thinking time to find good ways to coax him into trying the bone by himself. Maybe chopping them up and mixing with egg or egg yolk will persuade him~ He's now eating a good amount of muscle meat. Have you tried simply doing meals with muscle meat and see how he goes? Next meal, try just giving him the meat slivers without soup and see how he handles that. Not all ferrets will use a feed box unfortunately. Its something that is just there incase they want privacy and helps reduce the running off and stashing meat somewhere. He's eating by himself sometimes, that is fantastic! You could possibly place a plate with his food on it inside the feed box and see how he goes. Just keep in mind that its really a personal preference for a ferret to use a feed box. If you want to know if he eats on his own, weigh out the food before you place it in his condo and when you come back later, take away the left overs and weigh it again. If theres a difference then he would have eaten something. Lovely photos by the way! The deer is pretty.

Evening Machan hope all is good with you this week. Jami and I have tried the tips, cut up the wing sections, drizzled with oil, mixed in with other stuff etc. The feed box idea was cause we don't want his condo to get food all over and then be growing who's knows what lol. He does NOT like pork, we are getting him to eat it but with resistance lol. He is eating this past week on average 5 ounces of soupie with ground steak, heart (very little since in with soupie), chicken, pork, veal, flank steak etc. Does good with all except pork. He is eating small chunks now.
We did try gizzards twice so far and nope doesn't like that either...thought same thing it will strengthen the jaws. We will try it again. Tonight we are leaving chicken wing pieces overnight.
We know he is not eating when we are not here....weighs the same or maybe 1/4 ounces less. 2 times he did really good but that was week 1 on raw. He loves salmon oil for sure. We are using for nail trims and works great on the belly heeheehee
We are putting 1% hydrocortisone cream on 2 times a day....scab is cleaned them applied (I was pre-made in college then changed my major to hospital administration ) appears to be less.....will take more pics.
He is such a cuddle bug and we love him so much.

We need to try a beaten egg again, tried several weeks ago and he didn't like it. What other ways have you all done to get them eating eggs

Hi! It's great to hear you've tried cutting up the sing sections and used oil. How did that go with Gomez? Having a feedbox in the cage is a great way to get them to stash in it rather than all over the cage. You wouldn't need to worry about stashed food too much. Even if it gets old, ferrets are pretty smart and won't touch rotten food. I tend to check for stashes when I clean out my cage. One of my males is a huge stashed. (He's so cheeky.) It sounds about right that Gomez is showing resistance with a new protein. Like you've done with the chicken at the start of the switch, you will need to repeat the process with a new protein. Just start straight with slivers and hand feed him, then gradually he will become accustom to eating pork and will eat on his own. What proteins has Gomez tried so far? I'm assuming steak would be beef (though you can get steaks of any protein) I think Gomez has done incredibly well. He's progressed fantastically so far and is also eating non chicken meats as well. Gizzards can be quite strange to ferrets at first. I had resistance as well. I didn't cut them up and went straight from hand feeding the chicken gizzard as it was. Continue to persuade him to try the gizzard. It may take some time. Cutting it up will also help. Or you could try another technique by taking the meat and running it through some warm water before offering it. @poncesmom told me about that one and it worked quite well with my stubborn girl. Gomez will eventually start eating on his own. Just continue as you are and he'll come around. Salmon oil is great! I'm happy to hear he enjoys it! We are putting 1% hydrocortisone cream on 2 times a day....scab is cleaned them applied (I was pre-made in college then changed my major to hospital administration ) appears to be less.....will take more pics.
Fantastic~ Thats great news to hear that its clearing up. I read somewhere that the mass cell tutors usually go away on their own as well. Do you keep a ferret journal? It would be good to note this down, especially the day it was noticeable and the day it goes away. If it continued to come back, maybe get a vet to check it out. We need to try a beaten egg again, tried several weeks ago and he didn't like it.What other ways have you all done to get them eating eggsMy guys were fond of eggs from day 1. Since its been several weeks now, try beating up an egg and serve it to him. He may have a change of heart. If he doesn't show a liking to it, dab some on his mouth or near his gum. You could probably repeat it like that until he starts eating on his own, other wise you could try spoon feeding it to him. he's always used to being hand fed by you guys, so maybe if you tried that he would give it a taste. I know we beat the egg, that is key bit then I see others say they just do egg yoke.....is there a file on this?I personally think the whole egg is the best. Though, feeding just the yolk is also acceptable. It's also not recommended to feed egg whites, here's a snippet: Here's another little lesson on egg~ I also want to mention that just one egg yolk contains about 115 mg of choline. ;u; I hope all is well for everyone~ Have a lovely day or night. I'm off to finish some homework now. Bye!

Hi all is good here....so it's just like 1 egg beaten a week? We sure don't want hair balls. So your fuzzies eat the egg with nothing else added?

Mine like their egg as a snack. I whip up one or two with a dash of warm water. Sometimes, I will also add a drop of oil. They also like egg on top of beef. Mast cell tumors are not related to Adrenal as best I know. They're pretty common in ferrets and so don't overworry. Adrenal usually begins with hair loss and in older ferrets. The most common theory is that it's linked to irregular lighting cycles. Some ferrents will begin a melatonin regime and if you need more info on that, I'll work on getting you some. Another sign of Adrenal would be a form of sexual aggression. Gomez is an only ferret so you wouldn't be as likely to notice it but he might display signs of mounting your hand or acting a bit aggressive. So Gomez doesn't like pork or gizzards. What a little gourmand! When you run into reluctance on a new protein, try giving it as a meal for two or three days until he becomes familiar with it. Remember each new food is strange to them and they just don't recognize it as food. Pork and gizzards are usually favorites of ferrets so keep trying. Like @machan says, try the warm water trick, or try to get creative and think of other ways to offer something new. Try it cold or hot, dip it in oil or water, put a soupie food on top. It's all about familiarization and learning how they prefer their food prepared. They're all spoiled little Divas and I adore that about them (most of the time :slap:). You're doing well and give 'our'sweet Gomez a super big hug.

Another good idea would be to use something he loves. Example, He loves salmon oil, so you could chop up the gizzard into tiny piece (so he doesn't stash- I noticed the smaller the piece, the less mine stashed at the start of switching) and drizzle some salmon oil on it. Also maybe only start with a few pieces. I think too many pieces may be overwhelming for ferrets at the start. They're funny creatures.

Morning Everyone
We tried gizzards yesterday and cut them really small, he didn't want to but as normal kept trying and he ate about 1/4 ounces of gizzard.....then we whipped up an egg with some water. Now, this time he liked the egg, go figure.....oh little fuzzies. Ate about 1/2 egg and have the other 1/2 in the fridge. BUT, I think it gave him a colons copy as this morning he has the poops, liquid, running etc......we have read it can give the runs, should we not have him the eat the rest today? Had to give him a bath as he had poop on his feet and side.
We almost went today to get another, down in Boston there are 5 all under 13 months that need to be rehomed, ferret has cancer. We want another so bad but you just don't know who, what etc.....but we also didn't with our boy either.....we'll see. How long does the soft runny poops last while on soupie? We are making soupie thicker for the last 2 weeks by adding more chunks, silvers etc
We do use salmon oil for all kinds if train or starting a new protein. He doesn't get much a week cause that too can give the runs. We went to a baby shower yesterday so he was not out like he normally is after breakfast we put a cut up wing tip, like 4 pics of it....ate a very little of the leftover soupie and no wing.....loves to play with it, gnaw bit still not 100% yet....he will.
Guess he might be one to never use a feed box, we might try the cardboard box like some do since pouncesmom says they like it dark. Have a great day......pics and journal post later today
