Not pets, yet, but we can sit on the porch 6-8 feet away while they feed. So far they're all rubythroats. Today Dar saw 5 at once but only 1 will feed at a time. They spend a lot of time chasing each other away from the feeder. If i can find the camera I'll see if it can do a better job zooming

They are wonderful, aren't they? I get so excited when I see one. I'd love to put in hummingbird plants. gfountain has one that appears right in front of her face. I wonder what the little one wants to tell Gina? It sounds like you are having fun discovering all the nature around your new home. (dance)

Oh, my little hummer is so adorable! Today she flew around the corner of the house and actually brushed against my arm! I apparently startled her as much as she startled me because she 'jumped back' and just looked at me quizzically for a moment before going on her way. One of these days I WILL get a picture of her!

My favorite winged friend! One spring, I found a baby in the driveway. I immediately took him inside and spoon fed him sugar water for a few hours. He perked up and was able to fly away. He stayed close to my feeders and me that whole summer! He would land close to me as I sat, the buzz over to my arm. He followed me around the property as I walked the dogs. I really didn't want to see him migrate!

I have about 7-9 rubies feeding past couple of weeks. Two of them are aggressive and chase away the others. When both bullies are there at the same time they have collision battles, I could stand right in the midst of them and they would be so into flying into each other to notice me. lol

It's actually rained here the last couple days so da boids haven't bee around as much, but at least a couple have shown they are getting used to us. We've also identified a number of migrating birds that I never saw in Florida. We've seen rufous sided towhees, nuthatches, swifts, etc. The only really big, Florida type bird we've seen is a great blue heron at Bay's Mountain Park. Right now we're covered with robins. Dar found a monarch caterpillar which she put in a big jar with some milkweed leaves. You think ferrets poop? This thing pooped 15 times overnight, lol. After it was here for 2 days, overnight it went all pupal. I've never actually seen a monarch chrysalis in person. Last night the zipper appeared, like a string of gold pearls around the top. The gold bits are all round. This is the best shot I got. Bloody amazing. It should emerge tomorrow or Tuesday

She is lovely. You're very lucky to have that experience. Have you seen many other types of butterflies yet? Your pictures are great. I hope you'll get some more.
Around my property we see several types of yellow Sulphurs and some pretty blue ones that I think are Purple Admirals. My favorites are any of the Swallowtails. Parsley is a great host plant for some of those.
I put in a butterfly garden in my last two homes. It's so much fun learning about the nectar plants to draw the adults in and then when a new type of Butterfly showed up, we would identify it and put out the host plants for the females to lay her eggs on.
