I love hearing how well everyone is doing. They're all moving along very nicely.
You're doing everything right and that makes a huge difference.
Ghost ate the wing tip! He ate half of it before I went to bed.Good for Ghost. He's young and hungry. Keep putting the wing tips in and maybe add one or two.
He's young and needs the calcium. Phoenix is in with him, so she will probably follow along and want one also.
I wanted to mix it up from the get go to get them used to a little different protein. So I used pork and chicken slivers.
One small note. Be careful of mixing animal proteins. You're okay with the two for now. The reason we suggest sticking to one at a time for a meal is in case someone has an allergy or intolerance to a meat and you see it in their poop, then you want to know what caused it.
If you put too many proteins together, you won't know what caused the problem and that means you have to eliminate one and see if that's the problem and then eliminate another to see if that is the cause.
Do ferrets eat the meat that they stash? or do they just hide it like everything else they steal?
They do! Jerkified meat is a true ferret delicacy. It's so yucky and I hate finding a forgotten piece but they will eat it. Some ferrets fall back on natural instincts and stash in litter boxes. They'll eat those pieces also.
Though I am having trouble figuring out how many cubes i should thaw out for everyone. i started with two each but then moved on to two for luffy and freya and 4 for ghost and phoenix. i guess ill figure it out when i start feeding ghost and pheenie separately. I just want to make sure everyone is eating enough.
I had the same problem with my four. We're free roam and everyone eats at different times. It's hard to tell who ate what. I'm home though and was able to keep watch.
If the plate is clean and they were in the cage and couldn't stash, they can eat more. Ferrets will stop eating when they are full.
Right now they need to eat alot. They will do this for awhile longer maybe even a few months.
Winter is coming so their appetites will also increase.
I'd figure on putting out 4 ounces each for the boys and 3 ounces for the girls.
I would do that for both meals. It may be too much but watch and see.
That should even out between what girls eat and what boys eat.
You can safely leave the soupies out, so over feed for now and then work on reducing. You may waste some but you'll learn quick enough.
Do you have a scale that you can weigh food on?
this morning phoenix and ghost ate 2 oz each. im nearly out of frozen soup cubes so i need to make more soup. but this time ill make it thicker and a loooootttt more of it with bigger and more slivers for them.
Luffy and freya both ate an oz each. but i had to hand feed them in my lap. They ate it easily but they seemed to only want me to feed them then eat by themsleves. but they seem to like their food.
Excellent. Make it thicker, even a little thicker than a yogurt consistency and add bigger slivers.
Ghost and Phoenix can easily handle bigger pieces.
Hand feeding the girls will really help. The little prince and princess want special attention and if that's what works, then so be it. It really does build a lovely bond and you will get rewarded with more snuggles and kisses.
If you're sitting with them on your lap, use a colorful plastic baby spoon.
Offer the spoon for a few tastes then lower them and the spoon to the plate.
Let them eat off the spoon while you hold it on the plate and then leave the spoon there and just sit with them. See if they continue to eat.
You won't always have to hand feed but for now, it's a good thing.
Pat yourself on the back and give them big hugs. You're all doing so well.
I'll put up a little learning material in the next day or two that I think will help you.
For now, everything is absolutely perfect.
