My vet says something everytime I go about rabies---she does not say anything about distemper. I don't know if they r pushed to say something by higher ups or what. She did tell me she was doing a tartar cleaning on a ferret and the rubber band popped loose,(evidently rubber band holds mouth open) and canines came down and brought the blood. She said she was required by law to call authorities if there is blood. She said the ferret was put under quarantine for 10 days. The lady did not vaccinate her ferret either. The ferret I got off craigslist, I gave her rabies shot only---this was about a yr ago, because she bites. I did not mind her biting me, but I did not want her biting tech who does her nails. But tech says she is very good, so I will not do it again.... fingers crossed lol. Monkey still bites. My senior has only what they give at Marshall Farms. She is seven. My baby is 8 mos old . She has only marshall farm shots. I have heard little about this disease---If I heard more, like if vet warned me of some type of outbreak, I would worry about it. but my vet has not mentioned anything. This is all I know about it. www.ferret-universe.com/health/adv.html

My old vet has never pushed a rabies or distemper shot on my two elder ones. It's the only thing I really like about them. They haven't been seen by a new vet but they cannot force you to do it either. One thing the law does cover is that if an animal is sick or will be compromised by the vaccine, your vet can opt out and it is completely legal.

Good to know. This guy has had his rabies (and is a nipper!) but I wouldn't plan on giving him anything else. I'm sure it's a law/liability thing for pet stores. So I went back today, this time with a toy and some better food for them to give him. They were down to $60 today, so there's progress. The girl working at the store that showed him to me the other day has been a great advocate, and has really been pushing for them to give him to me for free. They have had him for 2 weeks and he's been on the floor for about 5 days. She says no one has even looked at him, most likely because he's an albino and older and they don't sell as well. She was also happy to mix in the higher quality kibble I brought with me with the garbage they are feeding him. I forget what they are feeding him but I brought a mix of instinct rabbit, instinct duck raw boost, orijen cat and kitten and orijen red. Bless her He's SUCH a ham, but man does he have a nasty bite. He wants to be held and loves around his face to be pet. When you put him down he wants to be picked back up and will jump on your arm and grab it with his nails. But then proceeds to lick and bite. He got me pretty good on the inner wrist when I wasn't paying attention! He was playing with the toy I brought, which I'm taking as a sign that he isn't acutely ill. I'll be back on Friday with the boyfriend and Yogi in tow. Whether or not he can get along with Yogi will be the deciding factor. If he doesn't, I'll see if I can get him to the ferret rescue because he can't stay there. I'd hate for him to go to another terrible home(s) like he had before. Meanwhile, here are some more pics!
