I rescued Aveline almost two months ago from a young couple who housed her in a dog kennel filled with sawdust. They lived in a small house with their toddler and two very large dogs, and had very little time for my poor sweet girl. She was the calmest, sweetest most laid back ferret I'd ever met and she captured my heart from the very first moment I met her.
I think everyone has (or has had) at least one pet in their life that just has the most incredibly awesome personality, happy and spunky and full of life, and that was Aveline to me. The minute I opened the carrier and let her out into my room to explore, I knew she was happier. I almost cried after she gobbled up her soupies on that first night home, she looked up at me and licked her lips and I swear if she could speak, she would have said "thank you".
Over the last week I've been at my Aunt's house, just about 2 hours north of where I live, dogsitting for her while she's been on vacation. I brought the kits with me, but decided to leave Aveline at home in the care of my sister, because she hasn't been with me that long.. I was afraid that yet another new environment would stress her out.
Thursday night, my sister was playing with Aveline, and said at one point Aveline stopped playing and started heaving and wheezing like she was going to vomit, making noises like a cat trying to hack up a hairball. My sister calmed her until the heaving stopped, then picked her up and held and petted her for awhile, but noticed that even after she calmed down she was still wheezing.
My sister put her to bed in her cage, and Aveline fell right asleep, but could not be roused the next morning.
I feel horrible.. and guilty. I knew I should have brought her with me. I'd been on the fence about the idea for a few weeks but I figured "better safe than sorry".. heh.
I don't even know what really happened. My sister's bedroom is in our unfinished basement, I can only assume that the dust aggravated her poor little lungs.
What ever happened, Aveline, I'm sorry, and you will be most sorely missed.
