We lost Newton today. This is his story.
The ad said 3 ferrets will separate no pictures. My husband asked about them. So the previous owners sent a video. It was sad They new nothing had no names lived in a hamster cage fed meow mix. Had been bathed several times to help the owners kids "allergies" claims they were given to her. Though we had to pay $75 for just the fur on their butts it was worth it to keep them together. While putting them in our travel cage the first was a little marked white female I felt her ribs the second a sable male whose tail had been broken instead of a natural curve it's an S with a knot. Finally a white male all his teeth were grey his back feet curled from never cut claws his ear was completely scabbed over the skin around his neck sagged I could feel all his skull. The ride home we knew he would have been the last to get rehomed if anyone would have taken him in.
I refused to have kibble in the house from day 1 they were on soup to start their transition. With most of my concern on Newton he knew I was trying to help in 2 days he could keep his feet from sliding out from under him on the tile. 3 weeks of constant soup supervision he started eating on his own once he started eating bones his breath smelled good and they looked so much better. Still clarity from tip to gum line but the bones brought his muscles back in his skull so his skin didn't sag anymore. Finally the day came he dooked and played with us and his friends we got to see this 3 times he usually did his lap around the house and was ready for bed. I kept his ear clean and put anti itch cream on it with his age and health removal was out of the question.
This month he started declining he had some odd poos then started losing his appetite there was never blood in his stool. He started losing muscle again poor guy couldn't eat bone so his mouth health started declining. Then the rest of him started to go he made one last lap around the house Wednesday night. He had no fight left in him we took him to the vet today and 5pm he passed on his own at their office. They felt a mass in his upper stomach and thyroid was enlarged. Poor guy had cancer and probably had it for years but no one ever cared enough to take him one time to the vet. His time here may have been short but I know I did everything I could to make him comfortable and happy. May be rest easy knowing his bonded buddies have a good home.
