Corvidophile Oh yeah, I agree. I think I finally was able to source some good breeding quality mice. I will see if I can get them by the end of the year. I'm leaving for a month in November so not a good time to add to my groups right now. msav they are doing wonderfully. I pulled my second colony today and separated them from the growouts. I also fed them live as well. The ferrets did wonderfully with them and even my old gal got to have her go and she did great. They really like these asf's. So far I have had 30 in one grow out and 24 in my next so over 50 already and I have only had two litters so I'm very excited. I also have many coming out of rats too. 21 rat pups right now and another girl is preggers.

I have not had any issues handling the babies with my mice, I even cleaned the bins one time the same day the new litter was born. The one litter I lost I am really thinking there was something wrong and have not had any issues since adding more protein for them and larger hides. I have culled 32 since I started.

What the heck?! LOL I'm happy for you FireAngel but dang it, I want mice. I did switch to mazuri for the mice to see if it would help but Kent is great. it 23% protein in it so I don't think they are lacking in the area. I don't think I am going to mess with the colonies, just let them be and not try to remove or introduce any others.

Mine do that too. Don't know why they have to tug o war over one when there is another unclaimed one right there.
It always ends with the skin ripping open and a mess. Mine have done this while the poor rat is still alive. Not cool!

It is sad because i see the little rat poops, which probably mean they were scared, but glad babies are enjoying their food.

The rats poo when I move them into the holding tank when cleaning. I'm sure they are scared for the brief seconds but the poo is just poo. msav I stopped letting them hunt together because of that. I do one by one now. After seeing blood squirt out and all over my tub I was not okay with them hunting together.

The blood is one thing, the screaming rat as it happens is what bugs me the most as it means the rat is going through a painful death.
I have one of mine (look kinda like your arbor) who does not know how to kill. he bites the right place for the kill but he releases and jerks back when it moves. He is such a silly ferret, as he is also the one who goes straight for the neck with my other 2 ferrets no hesitation there.

I keep my quail inside to promote laying all year long. They will be taking a little break in November and go outside and then I will start them back up over the holidays. I have 18 eggs in an incubator now. We will see how many hatch. Hatch date should be around the 21st.

Flora has a pneumonia. We went to the emergency vet last night. They put her on oxygen and gave her antibiotics. She might be pregnant so they gave her a safer antibiotic and are doing 10 days on it. Hopefully she pulls through. I took her off the wood bedding and put her on fleece. She is now upstairs in my living room for the next few days till she gets better.

That is very interesting that a rat can be put on oxygen---she must be one special little lady to go to emergency room. Hope she gets better Was watching you tube where this one girl trained her rats to go to potty. Just finding what corner they prefer and putting their rat feces in little corner potty every day. I do not know how long it took.Of course they will still pee everywhere she said.
