That's good! Just keep working on getting their bone size up. The goal is to be able to just give them whole pieces of meat and bone without any cutting or smashing. Do you have any kitchen shears? I find it easier to control bone size with shears rather than a cleaver.

Yes, but for whatever reason no one wants me to use them for meat (is that not what they're meant for?).

LOL, I think shears are usually used more for salad stuff but at my house they are ALWAYS used for meat.

So. I used them. Barely put any pressure on the handles (enough to slightly get through the meat) and *snap* one of the handles broke. I don't even know what to feel about this anymore. My luck is terrible.

I might be able to go buy rabbit on Saturday, if a friend is willing. If not, it'll have to wait until my mini vacation, which is next week I think.

It's been a few days since I heard from you. How are things going? Any luck on getting another protein yet?

No, the friend said they'd be ok with taking me to the butcher, then didn't show up until almost 10:00. Layla's been hiding more food at the top of the cage though, so its been a constant fight to make sure both eat as much as they want.

What is the problem with Layla hiding the food in the cage? As long as both ferrets have access to it, it really doesn't matter where it is. If she has some stashed there, just don't give them any more until they've eaten that. My Leon always carries meat 'upstairs' but all the others know it's there and if they're hungry, they'll go check.
I think you've got most, if not all, of the knowledge you need to graduate from the mentoring program. We're just waiting now to get some more bone in options for them.

That's the thing: Marty won't go to the upper levels of the cage at all. So he doesn't have access to it (which is why I want to build another cage). He went up to the third one once, but now refuses to go up there for whatever reason, with or without ramps/tunnels. I just snatch it from Layla's "Food corner" and put it back in the bowl or tupperware. Yay! I think once I can get a hold of turkey or rabbit and actually see how far it goes I'll feel better. Now that I'm not just filling in their diet, I'm spending less than I was a month ago, especially now that I know I don't have to spend 3-4 bucks a pound on beef heart since I found chicken hearts.

Ahh! I remember you saying that before. That is a problem then, but you're doing correctly - just check "Layla's Corner" whenever you think about it.
What kind of cage do they have?
The largest outlay of money for raw feeding IS at the beginning. Once you've established a routine, it gets cheaper because you can stock up a little bit and wait for sales.
Go back to the mini-book on page 2 of this thread and read through it again. Make sure you don't have any questions that I've left unanswered.

They have the Kaytee My First Home for ferrets. And nope! No questions!

If I recall, those shelves are fairly small with narrow ramps. I would guess that Marty doesn't feel safe on those ramps. Until you get your new cage built, you could zip tie tubing onto the ramps. Then you could move the tubes to the new cage.

I didn't get the ramps with the cage, so the ramps I tried using were attached to the side of the cage instead. For the new cage I'm planning on very shallow ramps, since Marty doesn't seem to like tubes unless he's going to sleep in them. Doesn't crawl all the way through.

Any luck getting that rabbit or turkey yet? How are they doing with their chunks? Are you still increasing the size for them?
