All of the Love that you have in your Heart for Kalinka, will give you the strength to carry her to her final journey. After Kalinka is gone, then you can be weak with grief and we will be here for you.

I am so sorry you have to go through this. I think being there for Kalinka in her final moments would be a very loving thing to do. There was a PostSecret card sent in by someone that said: "i work at a vet clinic, when euthanizing a pet we give you the option of staying in the room with them or leaving....always stay...they look for you once you're gone." imgur.com/gallery/1ulxb

I am so sorry to hear that you have to go through this heartbreaking experience.
Before I got Penny, Bear, Bianca and Mel, I had three ferrets. This was about 15 years ago, so I feel like a total newbie with my current four(there is so much information about ferrets now compared t back then). It has been a while since I had to have two of my three put to sleep(the third died in his sleep at home).
I was living in England then. My first ferret, Pickles, was very sick when I had him put to sleep. The vet sedated him first, and then did the injection in the heart. I was able to stay with Pickles and hold him through the whole experience. I think he was almost gone with just the sedation alone. When they gave him the heart jab, I don't think he was aware of what was happening at all.
With my second ferret, Hugo, I took him to a different vet(we had moved house and the one we used for Pickles was too far away). They would not let me stay with Hugo, because they took him to the back room(operating area) gave him anesthetic via gas and then did the heart jab afterwards.
When it comes time to go through the sad experience with each of my current ferrets, I would want to have them sedated first, and be with them until the end. Stay if you can - the grief was harder to bear for me when I had Hugo put to sleep, because I wasn't allowed to be with him at the end, and I didn't have the comfort of knowing he went peacefully.

All of this stuff is making me cry now: ( she is gone and i did not stay with her. I wanted her to feel absolutely no pain so thats why i chose for her to be given anastesia first. I felt very ok with it afterwards. She said any other option would involve some sort of needle prick, and i didnt want her to feel more pain before she passed. I think if she was only sedated i would have been worried that she could feel it all but couldnt move and show her pain. Im glad i did it this way. I also got to give her a healthy serving of ferrevite right before (which she loves but i never let her have) and when they took her away she was very happy about that. thank you all so much for your support, im so glad i found this group. <3
