My vet asked which implant is the best to order for.my golden oldies. I live in Illinois. I'm afraid both my oldies (ages 7 and 10ish, both were rescues) are coming down with one or the other or both. We are going to check glucose, etc. and be proactive either way. I've never dealt with insol or adrenal. So this is a new journey. Any info and help welcomed.

By which one are you meaning the size? There is only one size available in the US without special order and that's the Superlorin 4.7mg or as commonly referred to as the DES implant ciao

so Superlorin 4.7 mg would be what I should recommend to her? Heather do you know the manufacturer? She is a great vet, willing to learn along with me. She has told me I am her only client that takes proper care of ferrets and brings them in regularly. How sad is that considering there are very few "exotic" vets in our town.

That's so great that you found a wonderful vet. I was so nervous when I made my first vet appointment as I was fully expecting to get the "you must use kibble!!" speech. Instead she was like, "oh okay have you considered whole prey?" She gave me a bunch of information about the benefits of whole prey as it makes balancing their diet easier. It is sad that more animals in general do not get the care they need and deserve. good luck with your wee ones!

Well my business went to the vet, when one goes we all go. The staff loves them. Possum (9/10 year old female) blood glucose was 57. Grizzly's I didn't get because their lab was busy and I needed to get back home (I am caretaker for my parents age 90 and 93, both have terminal conditions, other than being in their 90's!). So my vet is ordering the superlorinf-implant. She suggested prednisone for possum, but considering her age and how well she is doing all considering I decided to wait the 3-5 days it will take for the implants to arrive. Thanks again unclejoe!!!

May I ask what people in U.S. are paying for implants? My vet wants to charge me $180.00 each for 6month implants. Does that sound high?

Nope, actually that sounds pretty reasonable. You can order in packs of 2 or 5, and they don't expire for about a year if kept in the fridge. While it won't make a *huge* change in the price you may consider asking about ordering the 5 pack to reduce skipping expenses per implant. Maybe you can find another owner to split them with or you can use them on your ferrets in 6 months when they are due again (that's what I do).

Hi, I just wanted to ask if I wanted to order suprelorin outside of Aus / US, do I need a letter from a vet for it? Or can I order it commercially? I have two castrated ferrets, and I'd like to implant them with DES to prevent any future adrenal they might get. They're both a little over a year old and were castrated at 7 to 8 months old.

I've already asked my vet if it they stock it in the country, and her respond was there was none available, and i would have to find another way to get it elsewhere. My only other option at the moment is the preventative lupron injections monthly, and I don't think that is ideal.

Ok, you can try to have your vet contact the shipping company that vets in Canada use. If you have further questions, you can contact Debbie Field at Provet: Debbie Field | Export Coordinator | Provet QLD PTY LTD P: 07 3621 6000 | F: 07 3621 6099 dfield@provet.com.au We have to deal with them as Virbac (the company that makes DES) no longer provides a way for Canadians to buy it (you used to be able to order it off their website).
