Hey, my ferret has been sick for just over a week now. When I contacted my vet he told me it's the flu and I need to keep him hydrated and feed. I've been syringing him food and water as much as I can. He fights me but he lost so much weight. He's latharigic, doesn't walk has darker urine, his eyes are definetly brighter and more alert but I'm still worried. Is it normal that when they get the flu they don't walk? This is day 9 and how long does it take before he is eating on his own? My bf says he's lookjng better but my emotional self is still extremely stressed so I don't see it. I've been researching like crazy but I'm just wondering if anyone has any insight on what I can do or thoughts. I've been giving him baby food electrolytes and I also made some homemade duck soup but he's still not even attempting to eat on his own. Thanks

I do not know much about ferrets and the flu so I cannot really comment directly on that but in humans flu symptoms can last 2 weeks and you can feel crappy and tired for even longer as your body re coops and rehydrates. It can be a slow come back. It never hurts to go to the vets and have him looked at though to be sure and maybe even get some fluids while he is there. Sometimes once fluids are restored it is a quick bounce back. I wish you guys the best!

I would be very concerned with a flu diagnosis and my ferret is still ill and having to be force fed even after a couple of days. ciao

Did your vet put him on antibiotics or any meds? Is your vet a ferret doc, or does he usually see cats and dogs with the occasional ferret? What about the color of his nose, ears and paws? Are they nice and pink or pale? How old is your little guy and what is his name? Sending Get Well Soon Wishes. Please keep us posted.

He recently had very difficulties breathing so I rushed him to the vet just waiting to hear back. Thank you all so much!

I hope he's ok and I'm glad he went to a vet. It's best to be proactive and prevent pneumonia. We once had a flu go thru and 5 of 7 ferrets got it and were sick for 5 days each, with respiratory issues and appetite loss. Dar and I just got over a flu where I was sick 2 weeks and she for a week. Thankfully no ferrets sick yet.

I'm very sad to say that he has passed away. The vet had a very hard time keeping him stable and in the end his heart couldn't take it. It turns out it was not the flu at all but serious heart failure. It's been very emotional day but I want to thank each of you for your kind words and thoughts. It's overwhelming how kind you have all been even tho your strangers. I'm so happy to be apart of this amazing community. I hope all you babies are safe and healthy.
