Please help! My little fuzzy man is coughing (kinda like a cat with a fur ball) and I've gone from having to clean his box four or more times a day to one or two! His poop is seedy looking and thinner not really thin but thinner. He's still playing as acting like he feels fine and I can't feel any lumps in tummy. I have pumpkin to give him but no protrollium (spelling?) jelly. Could this be a hair ball??? What do I do?

Coughing could be fur caught in his throat. Offer him a raw egg mixed with a little drop of oil. His poops though concern me, I would go thru the pumpkin protocol anyway. If you can't get to the store for Vaseline, do you have any olive oil? Seedy poops are undigested fats. If he has a blockage or a partial blockage, his poops will be super thin and pencil like. I'm tagging Heather for some Senior Advice from our Ferret Whisperer.

I do have olive oil. I'm concerned with the egg. Will he get salmanila (spelling?) poisoning? Am I giving him the wrong food? I can list the content soon.

With the pumpkin blockage protocol, you want to use pure unsweetened canned pumpkin. The first hour would be one Tablespoon of pumpkin. You can use a syringe and add a little warm water. He may not like it, but then again some ferrets love it. The second hour is one teaspoon of Vaseline, or in your case oil. The third hour repeat the Tablespoon of pumpkin. The fourth hour repeat with a teaspoon of oil or Vaseline. You should see a nice big orange poop. Check thru it for foreign objects. If at any time, he crashes or begins to vomit, he will need to go to the Emergency Vet. This was my experience with a blockage protocol: holisticferret60.proboards.com/thread/16756

I'm not trying to alarm you. Chances are very good, it's simply some fur stuck in his throat. This is shedding season. It's just better to err on the safe side and try the blockage protocol. The blockage protocol is not recommended to be used often. It's an emergency protocol. From your poop description, it just seems to be advisable. I'll tag unclejoe. He has nine ferrets and I know he has been thru this.

This is my first ferret baby and I love him so and I don't want to hurt him in anyway!

What is his name and how old is he? There is something so special about our first ferret. Usually, your first ferret becomes your Heart Ferret. A little baby ferret is so precious, playful and fun. We love pictures, pretty please!

KItten chow, not so good. ground yellow corn, wheat flour, corn gluten meal, soybean meal, brewers rice, etc. You should seriously consider better for him.
Pooping is good. Any pooping. I've only dealt with one blockage early in my ferreting career and felt a big hard lump in the belly. Don't panic until the pumpkin has had a chance.

Ok. What should I be giving him instead? I live in a very small town and getting to a pet store is a big big deal LOL. So is there anything from a Walmart or a bimart I could pick up?
