Today after work I went into Beas room and took her out to the living room and put her in the play pen while I finished up a few things and I heard almost like a gagging and coughing. I went over to her and she would hide from me and she just kept gagging and trying to puke. Im freaking out because we live in the boonies and the ONLY vet that will even think about seeing ferrets is 2 hours away and they've already closed for the day. im thinking it may be a hairball but im honestly not sure. She doesn't pick up things or eat things she shouldn't and theres nothing missing from the play pen. does anyone have any advice for me?

you can try the hairball/blockage protocol. alternate canned pure pumpkin (a tsp)and vaseline (pea-sized drop) or ferret lax every couple hours. Before you do that, check her mouth. Sometimes they can get food stuck in the roof of the mouth

There hasn't been much of a change other than she's not making any noises like before and she hasn't vomited again. I've given her all of the pumpkin she would eat and it was way less than the recommended amount. All she wants to do is lay in her bed and not be bothered. We are taking a trip to the vet first thing in the morning. Please send some good vibes our way

How's your little girl doing? The hacking sounds like fur caught in her throat, the gagging often follows that. Sometimes they panic and it sounds like vomiting. Let's hope that's all it is. If that's all it is, usually if you can get a little oil down her throat, that can help.

I have my doubts it's just hair in her throat since you mentioned she is lethargic.... Usually when they cough because of food, even if they vomit, they spike back up really soon. I would be more worried about a blockage (even if normally she wouldn't chew on stuff, you never know what caught her attention) or a stomach bug. One of my boys had the same symptoms, and once it was a blockage, second time it was gastritis. How are the poops, if they exist? And if you already went - how did it go at the vet?

We called the vet this morning to tell them we were on our way and they said that our veterinarian was leaving at 12 and she's the only one who will see ferrets. So my husband got some of the Tomlyns ferret laxative and we've had pretty good luck with it. I'm still a little wary and I'll probably take her to the vet on my next day off as long as she continues to eat and drink like she has and stays as peppy as she's been today. The poops are not quite as full but they are a little hairy! I've never been more relieved to see a hairy poop! Also, I appreciate everyones concern! We've never had a scare with Beatrix before and I quite honestly was freaking out. I love that I have had this forum to keep me informed and its helped us a lot!

So glad she seems to have come through her ordeal! Might be an idea to start coaxing her to eat a raw egg once or twice a week.

The yolk is the important and best part for her but you can give the whole thing just make sure it is well mixed together, like a scrambled egg if you give the whole egg.
