You mentioned he won't eat raw, what types of raw food have you tried? If he likes to eat insects, have you tried letting him catch his own meals that you set out for him in a room? He might find it fun and it would give him a reason to exercise a bit.

Yea, that is a long wait for a young ferret to eat. I would definitely feed small amounts but more often because as raynebc said--- the drop in blood glucose. Seemingly, there will no big yo-yo affect in levels if fed frequently. It may be a little inconvenient, but he will be so much happier. U can let him roam around for couple hrs in your bedroom each day or some other room with some potties in there.........BUT MAKE SURE THERE IS NO RUBBER OR FOAM RUBBER AROUND. Been there, and done that with Iphone. My ferret was about 5.5- 6 yrs old years old when she was switched to raw. It can be done, and may be a quicker process than u think .

He'll eat crickets and dubia. I have tried a small feeder mouse (I breed these for my snakes) but he isn't interested in them at all. He wont eat any kind of chicken or anything. He is an EXTREMELY picky eater. I do let him chase the dubia around the room, he enjoys it. I also take him on walks, but most of the time he just plops downs and whines until you pick him up.

You might try reading through some of the switching threads. I think he'd love to eventually be put on raw diet where he can share eating mice. Raw fed ferrets aren't as picky once you get them going. If you're really serious about switching and you want to start him on a diet that is better for him apply for a mentor or even start your own switching thread. I think you'd find once he figured out what he was missing he'd be into it. ciao

Wow 7 lbs.
They say that ferrets will self regulate and not overeat. Seems this poor ferret does not have the regulation.
I would think he would eaten that much out of sheer boredom. Poor thing.
It just is not even fathomable that anyone would not let their ferret out of the cage since mine get out for over 5 hours a day.

Im' glad to hear his stools are improving. I'm guessing that you mean lower calorie kibbles...don't do it. It's like eating a low fat diet, it's bad for you. It's especially bad for our carnivores. What they need is less grains and fillers (which is what they do with low cal kibbles). Keep going the way your going and start researching a raw diet as per your vet's suggestion. Crickets and dubia are good treats but not a good diet for a ferret. They do make for awesome protein snacks though. ciao
