To save money i was going to buy a whole chicken from the supermarket.
I'm just wondering if i can use the whole chicken? are there any parts that the ferrets wont eat? like the rib bones etc??

Nope they can eat any parts, ribs are nice and soft, very easy to chew up, they might leave the drumstick bones if they aren't used them at first.

Give them all of it. Neck, ribs, wings, breast, etc. When on a fully raw diet, they really need(if at all possible), various ages of meats, along with a variety of cuts.

Mine eat everything besides breast (we save it for human food). I crush leg and thigh bones and they usually eat most of it

ok, thanks. It may sound like a silly question but how do i cut up the chicken when its raw?
I'm only used to cutting up chicken when its been cooked (which is easier)

how do u crush the leg and thigh bones?? Hammers work great. I just smash up a the end of the bones to expose the marrow and then let the ferrets do the rest Some can't eat the leg thigh bones though because they're thicker, whereas as some can. Just depends on your ferret and their jaw strength and determination to eat the bone ;D

I give thigh/leg bones a smash. They usually just lick the marrow out of them

hmm.. i always worry that smashing up the bones just makes them really sharp and spiky??

Most ferrets can handle even sharp and pokey bones with no issue. Mine have never had any issues even if they look like daggers

The thing with raw bone is the way a carnivores digestive acids work on bone is to smooth out the edges as they are digesting, so no problem

I have a big meat cleaver that I use for the crushing. For cutting up, I find some sturdy kitchen scissors are the easiest to work with.

I use a old fashion can crusher to break the bones up my nieghbors think I am nuts its mounted outside at the end of the porch and less mess then a hammer

oh forgot to mention if your gonna go the whole chicken rout its normaly cheaper to find a local farmer and buy whole chick from them and ask for all the goodies (inners) with it also another way to get diffent aged meats chicks, adults alike ..
