I have two kits about 5 months old and I can't leave them unsupervised. Like Katt, if I leave the room for even a minute I have to put them in the cage.
About two weeks ago I ran out to the kitchen to get a paper towel to set a large glass of juice on. That's it. The paper towels in the kitchen are no more than 10 steps away from my bedroom door but I thought I could brave it.. nope. I came back to all three of them sitting on my keyboard, soaked with the large class of juice they'd decided to go snorkeling in. Juice was everywhere - the desktop, my bed, keyboard, they even managed to knock my super heavy gaming headset off onto the floor and break it.
All in less than 30 seconds.
I don't even know how they got up there. To this day all three of them try and try and try to get up onto the bed (which is next to the desk, only way they could have gotten onto it) by themselves and they can't. They bounce and jump and flop around for awhile until I take pity on them and help them up. Boggles my mind.
Then again.. my youngest (Trinity), is more monkey than ferret I think. I have a large window sill in my bedroom (not quite a bay window, but close enough), that's about 3 feet or so off the floor. She kept getting up there and I had no idea how! One day I let ONLY her out of the cage to run around and watched her climb up on top of a floor fan, then onto a wooden nightstand, and up onto my window sill. And you know why? Because she had ruined her favorite toy (stuffing was falling out), so I took it out of the cage and forgot it sitting up there. I'd meant to throw it away and forgot about it. She found a way to get to it!! NEVER underestimate a fuzz on a mission!
If they are going to play, I usually sit on the floor with a book or my laptop and read/watch movies. When they go to sleep (usually after an hour or so), I go back to whatever I was doing. If I have to leave the room or house, they are in the cage and it is locked up.
