She ate her wingettes last night and put her bones in the water dish lol. I know she eats some of them but if they're too big I guess into the water they go! I changed the water out, and early this morning heard her crunching away on one so she must be stashing her favorites somewhere. Gave her an ounce of kidney with a quarter of liver slivers this morning. She's still not a fan and becoming quite good at spitting out what I feed her. she climbed up on my shoulder during a feeding break and was licking my ear, husband asked if she'd bit me because he saw blood. Turns out she had "licked" her liver right out onto my ear. Stinker. Put salmon oil on the rest and left her to it, a little bit of it is gone but not much. Since I can't feed her multiple organ meals I'm going to let hunger work any magic to be had for awhile before trying CGH later. She's so cute and is doing quite well eating. She must really like her food wet. They also love it "jerkified", a term that Bella invented. It gets all crunchy and is a delicacy. Wynstan puts his big pieces in Paul's shoes. He is not amused. One trick for her. Stand at the sink with the kidney piece. While you are holding her, run the kidney sliver under some warm water and offer it to her. Don't put her down until she takes the piece. The warm water releases the smell and this always works for my Wynstan.

Yeah she's getting wise to me and the whole hand feeding routine lol! Not sure what her plan is with those watery bones, I changed the water out right away because not too sure about bacteria in that situation. Is it safe to leave them in there and see what she does? She puts all the bones in one dish and has another that she leaves alone. Maybe one dish is her play dish? I don't know what she's thinking but it's part of ferret charm I guess!
I'll try the warm water kidney trick today. Should I do it before or after playing? She's pretty wound up her first trip out for the day, she can go and go for 3 hours at her longest. Is it more likely to be successful before or after running around? Speaking of running around, Kat discovered the stairs last night and all she wanted to do was go up and down them for 30 minutes. I sat there with her the whole time but she had a pretty good handle on it and I bet it's a nice workout!
Wynstan cracks me up, I love his stories. The catnip cigar and shoe stash fetish are great. Kat is a big fan of guy shoes too, my son and my husbands shoes are like a fine wine of scent for her blech!

Taurine is found in any muscle that moves. Heart and tongue have the most taurine and that's why we use heart. I thought the amount of taurine was related to heavy usage of the muscle, so the heart I understand. But tongue... because they talk so much? That's interesting, I had no idea about the tongue. Thanks! (I was made to eat cow tongue salad once. Ew.)

If it's related to muscle usage I bet a cow works their tongue out in that way. If commercials are to be believed though those California cheese cows have a lot to say!

That kinda makes sense, although now I'm going to be paying attention to how much I use my tongue when I'm chewing!!! But mice? Perhaps they secretly chew gum It's possible... if you chew wheat grains long enough they turn into gum!

Aww, you both are doing so great! @poncesmom suggested the 'under running water trick' when my kids were being picky about slivers-it works!!! It didn't work 'overnight', but they got a taste and then learned the chewing wasn't so bad! My Elvyra is a stinker and is always making me scratch my head...like recently she started putting food in the water dish too! Haha! She is my number one stasher too, so maybe her and Kat think they want meat flavored water?? Ha! But that's a good question about the bacteria, if that would be something to worry about. I check and change their cage water bowl each morning. Since Elvyra has been making meat water, I have been doing a quick wash. I'll be anxious to see what the experienced mentors have to say about "meat flavored water" (giggle) Keep up the great work!!!

I'll be anxious to see what the experienced mentors have to say about "meat flavored water" (giggle) Keep up the great work!!! Thanks we're getting there! I'm going to try the water trick in just a few minutes here. Today is a massive juggle because of the icy weather, I finally got a chance to run errands. Both kids were home from school for 2 days so pretty much all the cleaning I did was wasted....not that it was much between ferret play and kid entertainment! Catching up on that and laundry. I'm curious to see what people with experience say too about watery bone stashing, our little broth makers crack me up! In running errands I found a pork sirloin package with tons of fat. Kat loves fat, hasn't tried pork yet so I bought it. When I got home to cut it up I decided to let her smell my pork fingers and gauge her interest before deciding how big or small to cut it up. She went absolutely nuts. I had to grab her and put her on the ground floor of her cage because she leaped out of the hammock and started following my hand with no regard for ramps! So she gets large chunks. I noticed her organs are still barely nibbled, so when I went back to the kitchen I grabbed the lamb kidney from the fridge and pierced the pieces, then wrapped the longer stringy pieces of pork fat through. Skinny strings, just enough so she'd be hopefully interested and unable to unwind them and ignore the kidney. Success! I'm still going to try with the warm water though. Being fully armed with organ tricks is essential in Kat's case. I figured I'd extend her pork love to beef attempts which crashed and burned. A lot of interest, no real eating on her own. One and a half ounces of ground beef and three and a half of pork. 5 ounces total probably divided into 2 muscle meals. I have another baggie of pork/beef puree that is two ounces of pork and three beef. If that doesn't go over well then I'll try beef chunks as it might be a texture thing. She loves chunked chicken and the chopped wingettes, maybe mush isn't her deal?

"Fully armed with organ tricks"! Ha, I love it! And that was a great idea! I have been blending organs and heart for my kids. In the beginning, they ate the thinnly sliced liver, kidney, and almost chunks of heart. I believe it started when I got pork brains (sigh, it's still just weird to me) I didn't want to touch the brains, so I spooned out the needed weight and blended that with their liver-that was the first time (since finally crunching bone) that they licked all the dishes clean! maybe mush isn't her deal?My Zoey, I think, prefers to chew vs lick. It almost seems like now that she knows what her teeth and jaw can do, she loves it! She also loves jerkified meats! I'll have to make sure I find all their stash spots before summer gets here! Have you tried any salmon oil yet? When I introduced beef, I drizzled some salmon oil on top and everyone dove in! I still use that to get them to try new stuff- salmon oil and warm water gets them going everytime

EEEkkkkk I'm not sure how I'll be with brains either so I totally get the blending there! I went to get Kat 5 min ago and found her nomming her organ puree YAY! I saw her and backed out very slowly to not distract her from finally caving. I'm doing an internal happy dance though :boing: I think Kat is like your Zoey in the chew vs lick choice! What she likes she accepted in chunks immediately and even the larger wingette bone pieces she uses for "broth" look pretty well loved. I bet she ends up being a jerkified fan too, better prepare myself for the potential stash hideaways! I've tried salmon, and she really really loves it as of a couple days ago. It wasn't enough to get her to eat that beef though, or the organ puree I originally put out. She'd lick the oil where she could find it and then primly walk away lol. I'm looking forward to trying the warm water trick if she decides to backslide on the organ issue. Fully armed I say!

My Wynstan doesn't like soup at all. Each ferret has their own food preferences and ways they like things prepared. We just have to figure out what it is.
The fattiest cuts of pork and beef seem to be everyone's favorite. Happily, fatty pork and fatty beef are the least expensive cuts. Try cutting off a piece of the fat and offering that first.

Yes the fatty cuts being cheap is the best! I get so used to buying on a whim with my dogs that I don't think in "ferret" yet. I'm doing a big DUH here at myself remembering the dried duck foot she snacked on before accepting the wingette for the first time. It doesn't get anymore obvious, and yet here I am hoping she likes ground beef! The dogs enjoy my mistakes though certainly!
Next beef try will be chunks, fat offered first as you say poncesmom
She tried CGH just now and was all over it. I gave her 3 ounces, a rib and wing portion.
So here's her list of things she's eaten so far, whether fed it or on her own:
Chicken: heart liver thighs wingettes egg
Lamb: Kidney
CGH
Ground Beef
Duck foot

Just a third of that 3 ounces of CGH left! Let her start on it before coming out to play and she got a third through before pawing at the door to come out. Spent about 10 minutes marveling at the stairs again and then played in her upstairs area. She found a way into my daughters room and got into her old toy box in the closet. She was in there doing homework and used it as an excuse to play with Kat so nothing was eaten! Ashley heard about the organ eating today and how I made her wait it out and said "You sure you didn't name her Kat for Katniss, because she was in the Hunger Games today!" lol. I think the stairs are tuckering her out. I don't let her go down much because I don't want her spine to bunch and get hurt but she can go up very safely and is happy to do it. I carry her down and she runs up, rinse, repeat. She scarfed another third of her chicken in record time after flat ferreting into my lap like "I'm done, carry me to bed now!" Pics! With my son Checking out my daughters old barbie car during the great closet/toy box romp

Did I miss it? Have you weighed her yet?? Super curious. Also you guys are doing great. My guys love Elk. We are trying beef soon found like 4 pounds on sale for 6 bucks coukdbf pass it up. They actually haven't tried it yet but if they eat gamey meat I'm sure beef will be fine. My guys love love love pork. It's seriously causes fights at my place. The loud ones not the mean ones.

I keep trying to weigh her but she's too wiggly! She's pretty much too big for this scale too, maybe I should get her while asleep? Or with pork as incentive? I know she's already bigger than when we got her and she's already looking less oily and wiry which is great!
I can't ever find elk, I've looked for my dogs but never able to get it. I do get deer sometimes though! If I ever find it I'll be all over it. I agree if your guys like elk they'll probably really enjoy beef too. Glad you found a deal on it, I love finding those deals!
Edit: We got her on the scale with all 4 feet on using salmon oil and my husband blocking escape. She hovered between 15.85 and 16 ounces depending on how wiggly she got for the oil.
