Ok So I just started feeding the soup to my ferrets. The only place I can find chicken hearts is Wal-Mart and it comes in a package of gizzards. Can I sub the gizzards for the hearts in the soup when I run out of hearts while i wait for the hearts I ordered?

No. Hearts are for taurine. Gizzards don't have much. And don't put gizzards into a blender as they simply become little rubber projectiles and destroy the blender lol

I have access to bacon with absolutely nothing added to it, but on the organ meats doc it says the belly is not nutritious. Dumb question but want to be sure- bacon is belly meat?

boogerybooger No, not necessarily. There are many types of bacon cuts actually, so it depends on which type of cut you got. Other than the belly, you also get bacon from the shoulder, loin/back, side, and cheek. The most common and easily acquired in the US is the American-style cut, which is from the belly though, but Canadian Bacon for example is a loin cut. European cuts are generally from the loin or shoulder.

You debone for the soup and use either human grade bonemeal powder or ground up eggshells instead You can find the human grade bone powder online and many times its cheaper if you buy in bulk I also found that cooking the egg shells in the oven allowed me to grind them up into a finer powder (maybe thats just because of my blender too)

Any time you cook anything it changes the structure, this is why we say only raw meats and never heat up bone. Heat degrades nutrients in a big way. Air drying is best

sheresafaye From your previous post it didn't sound like they were really getting/eating much bone. So starting off with something like thigh bone-in might be much too tough at first and those should usually get smashed with a hammer until their jaw strength improves to eat bone-in meals better, and some ferrets simply won't bother with the weight-bearing bones. It's easier to start them off with a chicken wing (you can section it into 3), especially the chicken wingtips, since thigh bones are weight bearing bones and much denser than these. Trying a Cornish Game Hen to start introducing bones also works well, or when at the stage of other proteins, quail also have softer, easier bones.

No I didn't realize the importance I thought I could substitute other stuff but the more I read the more I wanna try and get them on the right diet lol only been at this a couple weeks.... I didn't think cooking would matter but then I figured I'd ask cuz better safe than sorry. I have a meat hammer I can smash the bones and I'll get some wings too thank you so much! Mine seem to adore salmon but I try to only give them that for 1 meal a week can it be any protein? Like a pork chop?
