So ferret math has struck again, I went for a long trip and took 2 ferries to rescue 2 girls that were in a very poor state. The oldest, who I was told was 6 is a DEW her tail and mid back is very yellow almost orange, the other I was told is 3 a marked DEW, she has 1 faint grey ring on her tail. When I arrived the previous owner was not there and his neighbour let me in. OMG! I almost burst into tears seeing how they were living. The place was a small very small shop that someone converted to live in, it was stacked floor to ceiling with stuff and a path in the middle, the ferrets cage was rusting, no levels was about 3ft long by a foot wide, there was a blanket, dollar store cat food in a flower pot and an empty water bottle, the cage was also covered in duct tape, there was layers of newsprint with poo between each layer, and the smell, OMG the smell! The neighbour said I was to take the cage and everything, I didn't, I left it behind, I took their stinking blanket and just the fuzzies. I am glad I brought harnesses with me as I do not know how long they were in that cage without being let out. Once I got to the ferry I had about 30 min to wait so I put them in the harnesses and took them out to play in the grass. They are super sweet, really cuddly and just loved being out, GIGI, now Honey was doing the happy dance and dooking almost immediately, Luna the oldest was rolling in the grass and then just lay there chest up smelling the fresh ocean air. They of course drew a little crowd and they were happy as can be. They brought allot of smiles out from people and others were very inquisitive and asked questions and learned allot about ferrets in the 20 minutes we were out. Once home I set up my secondary cage and let them roam around the ferret room, but by this point they were pretty worn out from the trip, they were awake the whole time looking around from the carrier. I gave them both some Rescue Remedy and then I set them up with a nice clean blanket a hammock and a pouch, fresh kibble (yuck) and water, I lined the bottom of the cage with their stinky blanket and put the litter box on the blanket in the back, hopefully they will use it, and not want to go on their blanket, it worked They were so excited to explore the cage and the levels, but in no time they were yawning and curled up together on the nice clean hammock. A vet appointment will def be in order for the girls so I can make sure they are good, I will get Luna, the 6yr old, BG's done as well. I look forward to seeing how much they will change and grow. I am immediately starting raw conversion, Honey loves it, Luna I think will take some time and patience. I am so glad I picked them up, they have the best personalities and are so sweet and cuddly, I can already tell they are grateful.

What sweeties! Also lefertmama I live in Vancouver - if you ever have/hear of an emergency situation where a ferret needs rescuing feel free to let me know (I will PM you my phone and email). Right now we don't have room to add ferrets to our family but would definitely take them in and keep them warm and safe long enough for you or someone else to come pick them up. I also have a friend in Langley who I'm certain would be more than willing to rescue ferret(s) in need if it was an emergency. She has two of her own and volunteers at a cat shelter. This weekend she found a doggie wandering around lost in the rain and brought him home to dry off and eat. Then she went straight to the vet who found a microchip and the doggie was reunited with his (incredibly happy) owner. Anyway, just thought I'd offer since I know it's a long trip and can't be done on a moment's notice.

Luna is one depressed fert, the poor thing. I really feel they did not have alot of out of cage time, Luna appears to not want to leave the cage and if she does she hides in the tube or one of the many beds laying around. I will keep giving her RR and lots of huggs, going to wear a backwards hoodie and see if being out and about with me will get her to open up more. Vet appointment is for next week to get them checked out. Honey is exploring with the other 5 under severe supervision, I follow her around lol. She has dug right in to my others raw food dish and trys to tip over the bowl all the time. Luna had a teaspoon of soupies this morning. I also believe Luna is deaf, but she is a really sweety, just need to help her get out of her shell. Her coat is just so thick but pretty yellow. Going to give them both a wipe down tonight with some water and a cloth, get the dirt and goo from their old home off them. So much gunk around their eyes and feet and bellies from living in filth. Honey and LouLou are quickly becoming friends, once Lou is off her antibiotics I may let her sleep with the girls and see if that will help Luna out a bit.

Well Honey seems to be starting to enjoy herself, even played a bit with LouLou. Luna and Honey got some time in the ferret room alone and Luna wandered around and was checking things out. I did their weights tonight and they are not too bad off for girls, could use a little plumping but they are not severely underweight. Luna is 26.4oz and Honey is 27.8oz. I could tell that Luna was happy to see me when I came home from work, I took her to my room with me and she wandered around on my bed and checked things out until we went back to the ferret room. I gave them both a nice wipe down and gently wiped the muck from their eyes, I could tell they both felt so much better, I don't bath my ferrets often but these 2 will get one this week, just to get the last of the yuk away. Luna retracted again once the other ferrets were let out but she came and crawled up my lap to be "safe" I picked her up and held her under my chin to reassure her and she gave me kisses! I was surprised and so happy at the same time. Out of my others only 1 has given me kisses lol. Luna stayed with me and watched the others play around, Honey played a bit then went to her cage, she had enough so I put Luna in with Honey so they could rest and eat. Honey had almost a whole oz of soupie, Luna ate about a teaspoon, I will take it though, anyways I am off to bed, thanks for reading.

"not severely underweight"? Really? They weigh exactly the same as my girls, and I thought my girls were fat! Of course it depends on build and such. I think Luna is definitely scared (I don't blame her) and has trust issues. Once she starts bonding with you and realizes she's safe I think she will come out of her shell a little and start to socialize with the others. I also wanted to mention, if you don't have your babies vaccinated against CDV, there's been a recent outbreak in Dawson Creek. I know that most vets here don't recommend the vaccine since it isn't specifically formulated for ferrets and was basically unheard of in BC so thought I'd warn you. I know the risk of CDV is still relatively low but I think I will be getting my girls their shots this week or next. www.alaskahighwaynews.ca/news/dawson-creek/deadly-canine-virus-strikes-south-peace-spca-1.1751420
