He's peeing blood. Here's his diet: Wysong Epigen 90, 1-2oz. cornish game hen with 100 mg taurine, 50-85 mg hawthorne, 3-5 drops extra virgin olive oil, Bravo freeze dried raw treats (Buffalo Bites), Bravo freeze dried raw pork treats (for dogs). He's on the pred, but I stopped giving the prazosin, because he was peeing too much, the pred does a good job by itself. He's lost the water weight he had to deal with. I have to watch him, because he'll sleep and relieve himself which causes rash. I use Desitin Rapid Relief to keep the rash in check. I give the pred, ground up suspended in ferretone by syringe.
What do you think could be causing the blood?

Could be a bladder infection or stones. He needs to see a vet asap.

He's got disk disease and a heart problem. But secondary to that is that he retains urine. So he was on prazosin, but he stopped peeing last week regardless of what expressing method I used. So we moved to pred, which works really well for getting rid of the inflammation and water weight. Today about 3 o'clock, I expressed him and there was blood in the urine. It seems to be increasing, so I'm trying to figure out how to keep him hydrated and his system not too depleted until Monday.

I would be vetting. This was a problem I was running into with Lily when I was expressing her. There is a constant barrage of urinary infections because there is not way to express their bladders completely. It may be that you need to change up the antibiotic. ciao

I stopped the pred, missed last night and this mornings doses, and the blood appears to be decreasing. He's still urinating so it may be the pred is too high a dose or too harsh. I had only given him 7 doses. He had been taking meloxicam (vet version), prazosin, and the pred. I stopped the prazosin because he was urinating all over. It is possible it is a uti or stones or something, I'm just looking at the timing. Do you think taking both prazosin and pred could overtax the kidneys? No antibiotics, unless the praz is.

don't suddenly stop pred. Pred must be weaned off. You can set yourself up for more problems than you have now if you suddenly stop pred. Even after 3 days of dosages there must be a weaning off. Do not discontinue these type of meds without guidance from your vet ciao

awww crap. I'm glad you told me that. He's seeing the vet tomorrow as soon as she can fit him in. Because of the change in urine color, I was going to give him his dose to see if the blood kicked in again. I took him off because the change in amount of red was so extreme in just a few hours and there is no vet that will see him on Sunday.

It's confirmed-it's blood. but apparently there's a pigment that can show up that looks like blood, so we tested it. Teddy now has amoxicillin to take to get rid of this, Yep, you guessed it....UTI! I am a little drained and frustrated, but at least I know what is the matter. It's funny, but the amount of blood decreased when I cut back the pred. My vet decided to cut it back by half, maybe for that reason.

IMPORTANT NOTE: I gave the impression that he was taking meloxicam and pred at the same time. I had stopped giving him meloxicam a couple weeks ago. So DON'T combine them. They are contraindicated.

I'm so glad that Teddy is getting better and you found an answer. Give the little fellow an extra hug, it sounds like he was a good boy at the Vet's. (dance)
