Today they got to try Rabbit and they sure seem to like it! My community has been great at giving me meat for the ferrets, I had an old collage friend contact me saying he had 50-60lbs of rabbit meat that I could have So of course I said yes, another friend of a friend butchered an old boar and the meat was a little tough for her liking so we got pretty much a whole butchered boar, another lady had about 15lbs of freezer burned chicken that she just gave us, plus my friend with the ducks for duck! I have a 7 cube ft freezer full of meat for the fuzz bums :)Basically all I need to purchase is organs and hearts for awhile. I have also contacted a bunch of my hunter friends to remember me when they dress their kills next season, that I will take the organs, brains, eye's ect.. (I know to freeze it first for a few weeks) I also just learned that another old high school friend breeds feeder rats so def going to take advantage of that, once I build a feeding den to keep the mess to a minimum lol. My guys are set and I feel confident that they are eating well, What a lucky bunch of fuzzies

1. List 2 good sources of taurine. (Heart and Tongue) CORRECT2. How can you tell if your ferret is getting too much or too little bone? (the solidarity of their poo) CORRECT3. What counts as a "different protein source?" (chicken, beef, lamb) CORRECT4. List 3 organs aside from liver. (brain, kidney, pancreas) ALMOST right. Brain isn't really considered an organ in the ferrant world because it doesn't SECRETE anything. I think you get the idea though 5.How many different proteins does a ferret need in a week at a Minimum? (3) CORRECT6. How often on average does a ferret need to eat? (twice a day) Basically correct, more specifically we mean every 4-6 hours because that is how long their digestion is 7. Are leaner meats better for your ferret or fattier meats? (fattier meats) CORRECT FAT=Energy (dance)Got confused about #3 but I think I got it lol. I usually think of a different protein source like eggs, beans and nuts lol haha you got it!YAY! You passed! Good job! I am going to submit your final menu to the senior mentors and Heather will post when it is approved and get your status changed soon after. Please feel free to ask anymore questions and still post on the thread of course

Ok, read through your menu. I've got a couple of questions. what is in your soupie? Thurs...is duck bone in or not? If I read this correct, your a bit light on bone in meats. Just double check. ciao
Mon AM- Rabbit BI PM chicken thighs with bone
Tues AM-PM Liver and Kidney with pork meat
Wed AM-Chicken wings PM Pork mm
Thurs AM Duck PM duck heart
Fri AM-PM Rabbit with bone
Sat Soup Day with Oil and eggshell powder

Duck is duck breast, Soupie is chicken meat, liver, heart and eggshell powder and salmon oil. All chicken days except soup are with bone, wings, thighs drums, whatever I have, same with rabbit, the pork and duck I get don't have bone, so I watch their poos and adjust meets as required or supplement with eggshell powder.

The littles are doing great! Honey and Luna are slowly participating with the others and I caught all 7 of them in 1 bed yesterday! Woowho, there are alot less screams from Luna and Honey. They are eating well and their favorite meals are gizzards and rabbit! I took their weights again as I can see they are all shedding their winter weight and was thinking they were looking slim but the actual weights are pretty good! Cyrano 29.8 oz Jagger 37.1 oz LouLou 27.7 oz Jack 44.3 oz Milo 48.0 oz Honey 29.3 oz Luna 29.1 oz They are all incredibly active, Luna doesn't play for long but she is 6. I am thinking Honey may be showing signs of adrenal, I do have a check up for the girls scheduled for next month so will get her tested then, her vulva looks slightly swollen to me. Otherwise she is fine and runs and plays around, not so much with the others but she has been doing the war dance alot more frequently. Milo and Jack just turned 1 this week as well! They are the only ones I have papers for the others I will just celebrate their birthday on their rescue days

Sorry, there was some confusion about the replies! I didn't realize that Heather replied on the thread. Anyhow, she thinks your a bit BI light. We understand that adding eggshell to make up for loose stools is an okay way to do it at the soupy stages, but once their switched and past that the best way to get the nutrition and all is through actual bone. Look back at the beginning of the thread and take a look at the % that each meal type needs to be. Make some adjustments to your menu and I will resubmit it.

Congratulations (dance) You've graduated and you're ready to walk this path alone. You have the foundation to help you feed your fuzzes in a more natural and healthy manner. Please remember that your learning never stops, and dietary needs change from ferret to ferret and throughout each their lives. Be very careful as you menus have a tendency to be light in bone meats. Even now you're walking a very tight line. Ferrets digest very poorly and bone is difficult to digest so more of it finds its way into the litterbox. Ferrets especially very young ferrets require more bone in meats and need to be monitored closely that they're eating those meats. I would like you to be aware that though you now have the capability and the knowledge to create your little ones diets you are never alone and that your mentor (you need only pm) is always available to you. The list is also a very good resource and you should always be aware that it's available to answer any questions you may have either about diet or care. Good luck, in a few days Sherry will lock down this thread and place it in the archives but be aware that you can always look through it as a reference tool but you just will not be able to post to it. Your mentor will be in to congratulate you shortly :wave3: :thankyou:
ciao

Thank you so much, yes I had noticed the lighter bone content, so found an excellent source for chicken necks, same place I get my turkey hearts, and I have adjusted my menu accordingly the last couple of weeks, there are def allot less soft poos. Luna has a hard time with the bone but she is getting better at it, I still mix in eggshell with her meals. I am so happy and glad to have had the help of Abby to guide me through the final end of the transition. My guys are fluffy and happy, no longer chubby as they have muscled up and lost most of their winter fat but the energy level of all of them is so exciting to see. Thank You! Thank You! : : : : : :
