1. Where did you first learn about natural diets for ferrets?
I believe I learned about them on the old forum when I had my first ferret, but I always thought I couldn’t actually switch. I'm so excited to finally be able to switch!
2. Please describe the type of diet you would like assistance in switching your ferret(s) to. Be sure to include if you are interested in feeding whole prey (live or frozen-thawed) and if you are wanting to FULLY switch to a natural diet or PARTIALLY. If you are unsure what kind of diet you want to put your ferrets on, please express that and we can help you find the best type of natural diet for your ferret.
I want to fully switch to frankenprey and maybe I could try some whole prey, but not live.
3. Why are you interested in switching your ferrets to a natural diet?
I know it is best for them. I want my older ferrets to be healthier, especially the ones that have adrenal/insulinoma and I want my youngest ferret to stay healthy.
4. Do you understand that switching your ferret to a natural diet can be a lengthy, arduous process? Its not an overnight switch. It can be a commitment of several weeks or even months. Your HF Mentor will be more then happy to assist you in switchng your ferret(s) to a natural diet, but you need to be equally as commited. If you aren't willing to tough out a potentially lengthy switching process, or if you have major life changes approaching (baby on the way, moving, starting school, getting married/divorced, etc) then it might be a better idea to wait on switching your ferret's diet until you have more time. Are you willing to make the commitment?
Yes
5. How many ferrets do you currently have? What are their names? Ages? Genders? Do they have any health problems? Are they overweight? Underweight? How long have you had each ferret for?
I have six
Yogi Bear
Around 6.
Male.
He just got a hemangioma removed a few weeks ago, but other than that, he is healthy.
He’s not exactly overweight, but he does have a big belly. It’s always been like that. (2 pounds 4 ounces)
I’ve had him for three years.
Penelope/Penny
Around 5.
Female.
No health problems.
Not overweight or underweight, just a little girl. (1 pound 9 ounces)
I’ve had her for 3 and a half years.
Bentley
Around 5/6.
Male.
Just diagnosed with insulinoma.
Underweight. He’s lost half a pound in the past few months. (1 pound 14 ounces)
I’ve had him for 2 and a half years.
Hershey
Around 5/6.
Male.
Possibly adrenal.
A little underweight, but gaining. (2 pounds 5.4 ounces)
I’ve had him for two years.
Nestle (a foster that I may keep)
11 months.
Female.
Healthy.
Not underweight or overweight. (1 pound 10 ounces)
I got her on August 18.
Snowy
5 months.
Male.
Healthy.
Big and fluffy, but not overweight. (3 pounds 0.5 ounces)
I’ve had him for a month.
6. What diet do you currently feed your ferrets? (Please include all treats, supplements, etc) Do they already eat some form of soup?
They eat 8 in 1 ultimate during the night and morning. I give them ferretone only when I’m doing something that I need to distract them for (nail clipping, glucose testing), but I’m going to start using EVOO.
All of them (except nestle and bentley) eat soup at 2pm and 8pm. They’ve been eating it for about a week. I’m planning on trying to switch Bentley after his health stabilizes more. I’m not going to switch Nestle until I decide if I will keep her, but she has had a little soup a few times.
7. Have you ever tried to switch your ferrets to a natural diet in the past? If yes, what happened?
This is the first time I am trying.
8. What additional information about yourself or your ferrets would you like to share?
Both Hershey and Snowy violently threw up when I tried giving them ground beef a few weeks ago, so I think they might be allergic
9. How often during the week do you have access to a computer?
I’m on my computer daily and I have a cell phone where I can come on here.
10. Please post a picture of each of your ferrets (if possible).
I'll add pictures later
11. Have you met the requirements for this program? Do you have your scale, a place to access meats, hearts, livers, etc?
I have a scale and my dad works at a grocery store that sells a lot of the meat I need and I can go to two other grocery stores, including one natural food store that sells local/organic meats. Theres also farms around where i live that sell meat and a meat market that I plan on going to soon
I already have an independent switching thread: link
