Hi! I was wondering what are the best and safest ways that some of you use to clip your ferret's nails?

Their favorite oil on their tummies. I need to use both hands when I clip them, the licking keeps them occupied.

:christmascandle: The oil trick works great, if they like the oil.
I use cat clippers because my clumsy fingers have a hard time using human nail clippers, but Dar my wife prefers the human ones.

Yep, oil on the tummy is by far the easiest method. Especially if you are a single ferrent. You can use pet clippers or normal human clippers. These work really well if you can find them:

I use cat nail clippers as well. I feel for me they are safest. I have good control with them. I have my SO hold the ferret and I use one hand to hold the toe and then clip with the other hand. That way I make sure they don't squirm as I'm in the middle of a clip. I used to do a treat on the tummy but most of mine have so many ants in their pants they cant stay still long enough even with a treat. I must be doing something right - as I have been clipping little ferret nails for 6 years and have never hit a quick *knock on wood

Hi if you are a little unsure about clipping do it using two people one scruffs and lets the ferret hang down the other quickly clips nails ! ( me and my son do it this way lol we call it conveyer clipping lol ) I use pet clippers which have a small groove in the blade for fitting the nail into good luck with your clipping take care bye for now Bev

I put oil on their bellies to clip and I use small animal clippers. I can see their small nails very well.

:christmascandle: I sometimes have a hard time with white-furred back feet, so I will put gentle pressure on the nail before cutting. If I'm too close to the quick, they let me know. Any suggestions for an extremely squirmy ferret and no one to help? One of my girls will beg for oil, then once the gets it, she'll jump and flail, as if I was scruffing her. I don't even have time to grab her paw and line up the clippers.

If you scruff properly she should go limp...

I can't do it by myself. Only Wynstan and Juliet will hold still for the oil trick. Paul holds one for me and I clip their nails and then they get some fish oil as a treat.
You could try wrapping little squirmy girl in a towel burrito and see if she will hold still for that. They do seem to become use to it after awhile and get calmer. Worse case, take her to a petshop and they have services for that. I don't know the cost or how often they clip ferrets nails. They may be much more familiar with dogs then ferrets.

I have my husband scruff the ferret & hold the ferret so its kind of sitting in his lap. Then I quickly cut their nails (we use human nail clippers are cuticle scissors) and give them oil after as a treat.
I've used pedipaws with my fuzzies. I hold the ferret with one hand, and put oil in the back of my head so they are lick lick licking away, or have my husband old them. I find the pedipaws gives me the most time between trims, but a takes a little longer to do. I posted about it in another thread... I liked it, but its about preference. Clipping nails really depends in what you feel you can do the safest
