It starts to make sense - because the other two boys have dry paws, but lightly, maybe they just caught it?... I'll talk to the vet asap.

Went to the vet today, she took some samples from Gizmo - no fungal infection. She gave us an oil (evening rose or smth like that) to give him, either orally or locally, on the paw.

I'm glad to hear that Gizmo doesn't have any infection.
The oil she gave you, is it an essential oil? I ask because eo's are toxic to ferrets. If it is just dry skin I would personally stick to some plain vaseline, coconut oil or something like that. That being said - I'm not familiar with rose oil.

Poor guy. One thing that hasn't been mentioned is an allergy. If his skin isn't excessively dry any where else, could he be walking on something that is causing a reaction
Fungus is more likly but if it isn't fungal, that gives you another path to explore.

Thanks mjbez, that's a good point. I checked it out and it's called evening primrose oil - extra virgin (squeezed at low temperatures), not essential oil. I hope I am right to distinguish between the two (hope it doesn't mean the same thing). I've looked on this forum, and it seemes like other people used it too, for skin issues. I mention that the vet is a ferret specialist. I tried vaseline, but it didn't do anything, and he licked it off, olive oil - he licked it off, this seems to be ok to be given on the skin or with food, so it is supposed to help either way. I tried vetramil too, that didn't do much either (at least he didn't lick that off)... If there's anyone around that has experience with it, I'd like to hear an opinion too

OK, I have not heard of evening primrose oil - but did look it up. I can't really find if it is an eo or not. So hopefully its something different. Did you try rubbing the vaseline in? My Mika gets dry paw pads at certain times of the year and I found vaseline helped but I did rub it in really well. (and she enjoyed the food massage).
If the primrose oil is safe I would be very hesitant to give orally. I would only use it topically.

Evening primrose oil is oil taken from the seed of the evening primrose plant. If we can administer evoo and coconut oil orally with no ill effects then I don't see why it would be dangerous to administer this oil orally.

Bella might be right on that - like I said i'm not familiar with it. Because I'm not familiar I err on the side of caution.

Glad it's not fungal. Strange when you mentioned that the others have it as well. I have a very dry house in the winter and neither of mine have ever had cracked paws like that.

nixxie crazylady - somehow your messages only showed up now, it's weird. Yeah, allergy may be an idea (maybe the litter pellets?). Olive oil is indeed a safe option, and he loves it bitbyter Yeah, the other boys have it too, but milder. And I kept checking them up - it doesn't get any worse. So it might just be the very dry air here (my skin is all cracked, I wake up with bleeding lips..), he might just be more sensitive.. I hope it solves this way, otherwise, I may need to go back to the vet, if it worsens, so it rules out the allergy too... Is salmon oil more helpful for the skin and coat? Oh and Merry Christmas!

I kept looking at Gizmo's paws after the vet visit, and used the primrose oil on them daily - but I think now it's even worse, and yellowish - here are pics taken today. The vet told me she didn't find any fungus when she looked through the microscope, and that they were within normal range - but I don't like how it looks now.

I'm curious also to know the cause and relief for this. Years ago, Ponce had this on his paws. We had just moved here and our new vet didn't have any suggestions to help. It didn't seem to bother him though.
Does it seem to bother Gizmo?

Hmm... I wonder if it still is some type of allergy, though there is nothing new or changed in the house or bedding, and we use hypoallergenic, no perfume sensitive detergent and cleaning products (because I am allergic to...almost everything, including ferrets for the matter ). I tried oils, vaseline, the primrose that the vet gave me, but nothing makes a difference. He complains when I touch it, but that's about all...

I still think it is fungal. Maybe the initial test didn't get a good sample. I know someone on the FB page had the same thing. I'll see if I can get pics.
