So my sister is coming to visit from Australia & my mom lives in Arkansas, I'm in Nebraska, and we're planning to meet midway for a couple of days. My sister really wants to meet Fez, and I don't know what else to do with him other than bring him. My dog can be boarded at his doggy daycare, but Fez I can't see another option other than bringing him. He's got a smaller cage, (one like this www.petco.com/assets/product_images/7/791611019917C.jpg) which he's actually living in right now (attempting litter box training in it cause it's smaller). I've also got a small dog/cat carrier for him if needed on the drive part, or I can just set the whole cage up easily in the back of my SUV. My biggest issue is hotels? What sorts of hotels/motels would accept ferrets? Would any hotel accept them cause they're mostly caged? Or do you have to look for the dog/cat friendly places? Do they require a pet fee, or being caged they're different? I'm so confused by all of this. It's about a month away from travel time, so I'm trying to plan ahead! I know Fez loves exploring, so he'd enjoy the hotel. But he's not one to stay still and be carried much so I don't know if he'd be able to join us on any outings. I could put him in my backpack but that's no fun for him? Any tips greatly appreciated!

Start playing search and find for you hotels now. I suggest you check out the ones that will accept dog and cats and I also suggest getting a playpen (I use a Marshals with a top and bottom) so that you're boy can get out and play. Most require a pet deposit and not all that accept dogs and cats will accept ferrets. You have to be very careful. ciao

I travel with mine a couple of times a year in Canada. I have not had a hotel refuse them yet as they are technically not a free roaming pet, you can get a Soft puppy pen which is great for play and is lighter and easier to transport than the cage playpen. I have a med size dog kennel for car travel with a hammock a litter box and water bottle and food dish attached to the door. I even take them camping with me good luck with your travels.

I've only traveled overnight once with a ferret. When we moved from Florida to Tennessee. I bought this cage for the trip: www.petco.com/product/121636/WARE-Small-Animal-Habitat.aspx?CoreCat=MM_SmallAnimalSupplies_CagesHabitatsHutchesIt held a puppy pad, his food and water and a sleep sack. Aside from a little cage rage, Ponce was fine and slept most of the time. When we got to the Hotel, we explained that we had a ferret and he would be in his cage. They didn't ask us for a deposit. Once inside the hotel, I ferretproofed the room and let him out for a little while. I put down puppy pads and he explored. He found a small space where the bed met the wall and ended up sleeping there all night. I think he was frightened. In the morning, while I was dressing, he climbed into the bed and went to sleep. Then just as he got comfortable, we loaded him in the cage and hit the road. It was a two day trip and we never left him in the car alone and ate fast food, rather than eat in restaurants and leave him alone. Heather has a great idea with the play pen and unclejoe has a stroller. I tagged him and he can tell you about that. I hope you guys have a great time. (dance)

You need to call the hotels and ask about ferrets, as most "pet friendly" hotels are dog and cat only. It's no big deal sneaking them in a side door. Dar puts them in a laundry basket and covers it with towels and blankets. When we drove her here from Michigan, we stayed at a several different chain motels that allowed ferrets. Some charged a fee, most didn't. They were not 4 star hotels, but we just overnighted there. I want to say Best Western was one and Ramada another. You could just tell them you have a cat. They won't check the carrier. Our stroller isn't ideal for ferrets as there is a gap in the front closure and no visibility to the sides but it is a convertible. If fuzzy is harnessed we can attache it to the stroller with a short lead. It's mostly for when they get tired of walking. It was only $50

This is a pic of two of my guys enjoying some playtime at the hotel in Columbus. This shows the containment unit that I use. These two ferrets had just got off a 12 hrs flight from the UK. To have confined them to a crate or cage would have been harsh. This allowed them the freedom to play (as you can see) and do fertish type things. The playpen I'm using is a Marshals 11 panel. I bought the bottom and I bought the top. The bottom meant that I didn't have to worry about damaging carpeting. If the brats made a mess you just moped it up (yes that's some heavy snorkelling that's going on there and there was considerable water spilt. The bottom which comes with velcro to attach it to the cage/playpen allowing all water to remain in the cage. It gave them a ton of room to play and play safely. It meant they also had blankets to sleep in and a full sized litter box. ciao

I have to agree that the playpen is great for travel. Kind of hard to hide once it's set up lol. When we travel with ferrets we leave the do not disturb sign out. If we need the room to be serviced we call for it and have the ferts caged or take them out. Also, Red Roof Inns may take ferrets. It's up to each location.

i made the mistake of using a soft carrier with zippers, petco brand deluxe expandable. must not have fully close it after a pit stop and needless to say, having a ferret climb onto your shoulder while driving on the interstate is not a fun experience...

I don't think I would trust a ferret with a material/netting pen or travel carrier. Can they not just bite or dig through it? Sounds like your Fez is in for a brilliant adventure.

I've had too many bad experiences with cloth and zipper carriers. Most of my ferrets can easily work zippers and as far as the little screens that they use, they tear through them. I use cages for transportation....and even then use clip locks on the doors. The wee ones are too smart and too well armed to be trusted in cloth carriers ciao

I have that smaller petco small animal cage that I plan to take - he's actually in that cage at the moment while we do litterbox bootcamp stuff. Almost there!! I don't think I'd trust a soft carrier either, I found one of these at a Goodwill store the day I got Fez, so I bought it, but it's definitely very easily escape proof, so now I just have it sitting in the living room and he goes in and out of it for fun or for naps, but he's figured out all the zippers and everything. We've got a hard plastic small dog carrier that he'll car travel in. A coworker has a small animal/puppy sized play pen she's going to let me borrow for the trip which is good! I called the hotel to ask and the lady had a bit of a laugh at me because she had no idea about if ferrets were allowed, but she checked & said it would be fine because it's "caged" - haha, so she thinks!! My mum said we'll just put up the do not disturb sign when we go out and have to leave him in the room. I'm going to have to zip tie the cage door though while we're out, he knows how to bite in the right spot to make the door pop open.. Thankfully here in my house I've got the smaller cage IN his ferret nation cage so it pops open but it's against the ferret nation doors so it doesn't open enough for him to get out, plus he'd be still stuck in the FN cage. Can't wait to give him back all the levels! I think his litter box training is almost done! Haha.

Smokie loves going for rides. He doesn't always perch in my shoulder, but he likes looking out the windows. The others, except Lola, just go to sleep after about 5 minutes in the car. (We don't take Rosa out much because she can still be bitey)
