Alrighty, the ferrets are fed and cages are clean and the new girl is out running around with her piggy. I copied the questions on the journal you wanted me to make and did answers for both Caillou and Juliet. I answered all of them, but want to make sure this is what you're talking about-
- what they ate each meal:
- In the AM Caillou ate pork sirloin blended with water to a pudding consistency. He ate very well and on his own. - In the PM Caillou ate 2 oz of the same pork soup, needed a little help with the last bit but also ate some chunks in the soup that the blender missed. - - In the AM Juliet ate chicken soup (recipe from forum) blended to a pudding consistency. She ate well and on her own. - In the PM Juliet ate 1 oz of pork soup (just pork sirloin and water blended) in a more milky consistency, she ate good for it to be her first try, I did spoon feed her most of it. - - roughly how much they ate each meal - - Caillou ate 2 ounces AM and PM - Juliet ate 2 ounces in the AM and 1 ounce in the PM
- any additional supplements
- Caillou got .13 ml of Baytril 100 mixed with food - Juliet got .1 ml of pediapred mixed with water - - what their poops are like:
- Caillou’s poops are small, dark brown, about a 6 on a 1-10 scale - Juliet’s poops are small then another few hours maybe a little bigger, same color as Cai’s possibly a little thicker. - - what their energy is like - - Caillou has been lazy today, not playful just walked around a little and sniffed new girls cage but didn’t want to play, he’s a night bug though and gets up late to play. - Juliet has been absent in the world, I’m not even sure she’s been out of the cage today after this morning, she’s just been sleeping. - - Notable Notes: is there anything else you want to make note of.
- Caillou chewed on my carpet, well attempted to, several times. He seemed out of sync today once I brought home the new ferret, he saw her through cage bars and was trying to get to her cage. - Juliet was sleepy as usual, but extra sleepy today, think she’s having just an off-day with her insu.
Is that right? Do you want me to post that on my switch thread (here) every day or just keep it on my computer? Also about new girl. I offered her the same pork soup I gave Cai and Jules, she was suspicious at first and took a few licks, it was thicker than pudding, I just wanted to see if we could skip the soup stage but probably not, she ate maybe half a spoonful, but kept freaking out when she got a piece of meat in her mouth and tried to run and hoard it. Lol. She's already doing better with her biting, she doesn't bite anymore she just licks and then runs off. I was thinking about her name, and of course I was thinking of my TV show obsession, and I love the show "Bones".. well all day I was calling different names to her and she paid no attention, at all. I said "Bones" to her and she looked right at me. LOL, nope. Keep thinking new girl! Ahaha

Sounds good so far. Her name will come, but I have to confess that I absolutely love Miss Silly Pants.
All of mine were biters in the beginning. None meant any harm, they just got overexcited during play. If they bit particularly hard, I stopped the play for two or three minutes and walked away. I also used teaser toys and kept my hands away. Although, each one really wanted to bite my toes under the covers.
Maybe Miss Silly Pants would like her soup a little thinner. Make the soup and then just before she eats it, pour a little hot water over the top and mix it in.

I love the name too, it's just not her, she's a kickboxer instead of a ballerina... LOL I may let my mom name her, *bonding* hehe She doesn't bite my hands anymore she just tries her best to get to my feet, you don't realize how fast you can run until you've got a ferret I'm going to thin down her soup tonight and give it to her. She licked some of Caillou's soup from this morning off my fingers, she's not very picky, she tried to eat a cookie I was eating last night.. I didn't let her so don't worry, she just attempted to bite it. I forgot how big, smelly and formed kibble poops are, litter box comparison says I vote for raw fed poops. Lol.

Letting your Mom choose her name is very smart. It's also a nice way to Thank her for letting you bring Miss Silly Pants (I can't help it, I love that name) home.

My mom chose her name, and I do love it. Her name is Marcie she chose it from Charlie Brown, Marcie wasn't very girly and was very smart, and that's like former Miss Silly Pants. So her full name is Marcie Miss Silly Pants Bledsoe haha

I have some good news! I was talking to my mother about Marcie and she asked if the shelter paid if she got sick and I told her yes but that she's only 1 years old and they don't usually get cancer until they're older. Then she thought for a minute and asked me if we could Foster a ferret forever, and I told her no that when someone wants to adopt her we can't keep her unless we adopt her first. And she thought for a second and asked if we could Foster her until someone wanted her.. I'm pretty sure she was implying that we could Foster her and then adopt her before someone else did, so we wouldn't have to pay for her for a few months (LOL, that's my mom alright) so I'm pretty sure that was a YES to keeping her! Hehe yay!

And on a more.. difficult.. note, I have TWO chewers now :pullhair: Marcie is like some kind of extreme eater or something. She goes for anything that is rubber, cords, phone case, anything. Then she tries to chew her stuffed animals a little bit, and not to mention my skin (lol), but I just put a box full of plant-based packing peanuts in a box in her cage, she gets in there and starts playing, then starts eating them. Like, literally chewing them up and eating them, I stopped her before she got too much and took the box out. Lucky she doesn't chew or eat fabric, so far, but her mouth looks fine (actually great, her teeth are sparkly and clean) and she's eating fine and everything, but she is young at around 1yrs.
I couldn't offer her any soup tonight because I was gone all day and couldn't take her kibble out and when I came home and got ready to feed Cai and Jules she was eating her kibble. Not sure how long I need to wait but I'm guessing it's several hours. On the other hand, Caillou and Juliet LOVE LOVE LOVE the peanuts and won't stop playing in them. I have a box in their cage with some in there and I cut a hole on the lid so they didn't get everywhere, it's their new sleeping box, I figured packing peanuts are more comfy than plastic (giggle)
Here is their journal/log for today
What they ate each meal: In the AM & PM- Caillou ate pork soup at a pudding consistency on his own. Juliet ate pork soup at a pudding consistency all on her own.
Roughly how much they ate each meal: Caillou ate 2 ounces in the AM & PM Juliet ate 2 ounces in the AM & PM
Any additional supplements: Caillou got .13 ml of Baytril 100 (twice a day) Juliet got .1 ml of pediapred (twice a day)
What their poops are like: Caillou’s are the normal, small dark brown, a little runny. Juliet’s are small, dark brown and a little runny too.
What their energy is like: Caillou has been a little lazy, but I figured it’s because he doesn’t feel good and is taking those strong antibitoics. He won’t play with me, but he will play with Jules, it’s almost as if he’s mad at me. Juliet has been more active, she’s actually been running and playing more, I assume it’s her prednisone.
And a question- Should I start adding Marcie into their daily log? I'm not sure where to start exactly with switching her or if I should just yet?

I may be able to get some pork liver and heart today, I'm in Johnsoncity (it's about 30-45min from where I live) in the hospital staying with my grandmother right now and about 5 minutes away is an Asian market and if they're not closed when we leave this evening I'm gonna go by and see if I they have any organs and if I have the money I'll get them.
The ferrets are eating so well on this pork soup, they love it and I think a big reason is because it's about like pudding consistency or a little thinner and they LOVE it like that. They gobble down 2 ounces like nothing, I may start offering more, they've been eating 4 ounces but that's all I've offered is 2 oz AM and 2 oz PM so they may eat more if I offer more. Marcie isn't too picky, I'm gonna see if I can call someone at my house to take her kibble out around 3:00 or so, so it's about 5 hours after kibble so I can try again with some soup tonight, I'm going to push her along as fast as she will let me to get her caught up. I need to start adding slivers back into Cai and Jules food, they haven't had them for almost a week I think because it's been so hectic with them being sick and all. I might offer Marcie some quail wing bones crushed up after she's eating the soup since she's such a fan of chewing everything.
Stef, how long should I wait before offering Marcie slivers? Isn't it like when the soup is at a pudding consistency or is it after 1 week or so?

Since she is such a chewer, try offering her the slivers now. Unless katt says No, for some reason. I think she may take to them and I would also try offering her a whole small quail wing. See what she does with it. Take the Quail wing and put it in a dish. Crush some of her kibble into a powder and dust it with the kibble powder, then let it sit for a little while. When you are ready to give her the wing, brush off the kibble powder and offer her the wing.

Okay will do that tonight. Wouldn't it be awesome if she ate it? My luck says all mine will be on soup forever hahaha I'm pretty sure we will be keeping her, my mom seems pretty on board and likes her too. Maybe in a few weeks when she meets my other ferts and is on raw and such I can talk with her about it and make it official. Fingers crossed! And I know they're not supposed to see each other for like 7-10 days, well this morning I had the stairs in front of Marcie's cage from last night and I let Caillou down to play while I gave Jules her meds and fed her and when I looked over Marcie and Caillou were face to face, but separated by cage bars, I watched for a second and Caillou was digging at the bedding trying to get to her and she was trying to get to him, he started climbing the bars and spent the next 10 minutes trying to get to her. I put some of Cai and Jules bedding in her cage, and since Caillou can't have bedding I let Marcie in their cage while they were out so her scent would be there. Is that okay? I really want them to like each other, and Caillou really, really wants to meet her, I hope it's a friendly meeting.. lol

Oh and @poncesmom is Marcie look like a good weight? I haven't weighed her, am going to tonight when I do Cai and Jules for their 2 month mark, but I took pictures of her body- She's a little pear-shaped I think? Does that mean she's fat? lol.

I copied the questions on the journal you wanted me to make and did answers for both Caillou and Juliet. I answered all of them, but want to make sure this is what you're talking about-Looks great. Definitely save it somewhere. Definitely post a weekly summary as described on the sign up for a mentor post. Mainly I'm interested in intake, poops, and chewing as we start moving forward with the protein trial. As long as YOU can see all this and have it saved, you don't have to post it here daily but you are certainly more than welcome to as more details for us is always helpful. Hehe yay!Yay! That's great news! (dance) Fingers crossed... And on a more.. difficult.. note, I have TWO chewers now Honestly, I live by the rule that EVERY ferret is a chewer. Even a ferret who has never chewed a day in their lives can one day decide to take to it. That's how the original creator of this forum, Guili, lost her girl. She was 7 years old and had never once chewed in her life and one day out of the blue decided to chew something, got a blockage, and died (I think in surgery). Ferrets should never have access to anything that poses a blockage risk. Rubber of ANY kind is an absolute, 110% NO (there is NO such thing as "indestructable" rubber), stuffed toys with hard plastic eyes and noses, toys with small parts that can be ripped off and chewed up or swallowed, electrical cords, etc. For safe toys, look for hard plastic toys. I'll take some pictures tonight if I remember. Foraging/puzzle toys are also a great option for keeping them busy. Little Marcie is young (we think) and she is in a new home where everything is different, so she is probably stressed and anxious even if she doesn't appear so. Younger ferrets also tend to be mouthier. It is my hope that once your ferrets are eating bones, all of your troubles will disappear BUT some ferrets *ahemKODA* are just chewers. Definitely try offering her some slivers if she'll take them, and a wing tip is a great idea. NEVER be hesitant to try skipping steps. If you offer a chicken wing and they eat it run with it! If they are like "wth is this mom?" then oh well it was worth a shot and you'll keep going the slow and steady route. On the other hand, Caillou and Juliet LOVE LOVE LOVE the peanuts and won't stop playing in them. I have a box in their cage with some in there and I cut a hole on the lid so they didn't get everywhere, it's their new sleeping box, I figured packing peanuts are more comfy than plastic I would definitely not let them play with those unsupervised. First, just in case this was missed - make 110% sure that they are STARCH peanuts and not styrofoam. You can do that by putting one in a cup of water - if it dissolves it is starch and okay to use, if not it is styrofoam and suuuper dangerous. Even the starch ones you need to be careful with though. I can't let Koda play in them at all because he eats them like candy. While chewing one here or there might not hurt, it certainly isn't good for them (they aren't designed to process starch, starch is a sugar) and if they ingest enough it could cause issues. So while starch peanuts can be a great supervised play dig-box, I wouldn't advise leaving them unattended with them. For the soup, it sounds like they are doing great, so definitely add in some slivers and start working with them on that some more. For the soft poops - how much calcium are you adding to the soup (and are you using eggshell or bonemeal)? Marcie is a bit of a chub, but her body should change on raw diet. Kibble can cause a bloated belly appearance. It is also winter time for many ferrets, so that contributes too. I am not worried about her weight, though it would be nice to see the chub more evenly distributed vs just in her belly. lol For now though I wouldn't be concerned. For Caillou, how are his gums doing? He's been on a LOT of antibiotics, so his GI system is going to be a bit out of whack. How many days does he have left of the current antibiotic? When he gets near the end, I'll probably have you start adding in a little yogurt temporarily JUST for him, to help with probios and rebalancing his gut flora. For protein trials though it is really important to do one change at a time - otherwise you don't know which change caused the relief or worsening of the symptoms. It can take several days for his system to "clear" if he is indeed having an allergic reaction to the protein so we want to keep him on just pork for about 2 weeks. After that we'll start giving other proteins a try. You are certainly more than welcome to feed the girls other proteins, but you will need to feed it out of the cage so that Caillou can't have any (Sorry Chews!). Leave pork in the cage with them, and if you want to give Juliet something else just lap feed her separately - a good chance for more bonding.

Okay will do that tonight. Wouldn't it be awesome if she ate it? My luck says all mine will be on soup forever hahahaI PROMISE you that as long as YOU are persistent they will most definitely NOT be on soup forever. The key is to be more stubborn than they are. It takes patience, persistence, and a lot of stubbornness. If YOU believe that they will get there and remain determined, I assure you they WILL get there. The switch is a process and it can take a lot of time, but all ferrets can be switched with enough patience.
