Crazylady, your poem is so sad and it makes me want to do things that would get me in trouble with my beloved fiancee (like go out and bring home as many fuzz as I can carry, lol)
I think in addition what they endure as kits before they even get to a petstore, a lot of adopted ferrets endure more (Like my Kahlua and Mojito) and have many more scary memories to fertmare about. I think thats why, even though I've had Kahlua for over a year she still has bad nightmares.
When i got Kahlua, you could tell that she had been incredibly neglected. She was shy, constantly petrified and she was so skinny you could feel every bone in her body. Her over all coat condition was pretty poor- it was dirty/greasy and brittle, thin and too short- on her tail, she had almost no fur, just little hairs here and there with a tuft of hair by her butt. She couldnt play much because she'd get tired and start weezing. I thought she was going to die, luckily though I got her back to health and shes fat, beautiful and happy. But before she even reached good health, I recieved her original paper work. When I read it I felt like someone had just shot venom into my heart, she had been purchased with four other ferrets who were marked as having crossed the rainbow bridge. I am assuming from her condition they'd starved to death or judging by the cage's condition maybe even died of a blockage as all the plastic in the cage had been thoroughly chewed and some of the missing bits could have definately been eaten. These are what she looked like when I first brought her home:
When her fur was starting to fill in again:
Mojito came to us in amazing physical condition, unfortunately he also used to show signs of past abuse. He was hand shy for the longest time and it took me over 6 months to begin to form any kind of bond with him. He had been a gift from parents to their son when Mojito was six months old and the son was like 4 or 5. Although he was a beaut to look at, he had some serious emotional issues- luckily he doesnt have nighmares often anymore and he certainly never had them like Kahlua has them. If her physical condition was any indication of how much her previous family cared about her- I can only imagine what other things she had to endure before I brought her home to saftey and happyness.
SoCo was only 11 weeks when we bought him and even though he went through all those aweful things that Marshal kits have to go through, he has luckily never had a nightmare that I've witnessed. He did, however, have this totally adorable yet extremly heart breaking habbit of constantly searching for a teat. He used to do the lick-nibble-lick that I know means whelping baby animals are hungry (i used to care for a few pups whod lost their mom) I try to give him the happiest, easiest and most scare free life possible and I hope he never has nightmares like Kahluas. I wish everyday that I could help her with them but in the least they are less frequent.
