For the first time in more than 10 years, last fall I had two ferrets who were not litter box trained. AFAIK, they had never even seen one...they were my UK imports. It took about 2 weeks before they were using the litter pan in their cage reliably and about a month after that before they were 100% reliable about using a litter box when they were out playing in the house.
All I did to train them was pick them up and put them in the litter box when they began backing up and then praise them profusely when they did their business. I was delighted to see how quickly they learned, as I was pretty much resigned that they might never use a litter box reliably since they hadn't learned to use one as kits.
